Gesha Point ( bg, нос Геша, ‘Nos Gesha’ \'nos 'ge-sha\) is the small point on the east coast of Clarence Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica separating the glacier termini of Orcho Glacier to the north and Treskavets Glacier to the south. Clarence Island (South Shetland Islands)
Clarence Island (russian: остров Шишкова) is the easternmost island in the South Shetland Islands, off the coast of Antarctica. It is claimed by Argentina as part of Argentine Antarctica, by Britain as part of the British Antarctic Territory, and by Chile as part of the Chilean Antarctic Territory. The name dates back to at least 1820 and is now established in international usage, except for Russia, where it has been known as Shishkova Island since its discovery by Russians in 1821. The island is long and oriented in a south-southwest to north-northeast direction. Ravelin Ridge and Urda Ridge occupy the interior of the mountainous island. The summit Mount Irving, high, rises north of Cape Bowles, the southernmost point. The southeast slopes of the two ridges are drained by Dobrodan, Highton, Treskavets, Orcho, and Banari Glaciers, and their northwest slopes — by Skaplizo, Giridava, and Bersame Glaciers. South Shetland Islands
The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic islands with a total area of . They lie about north of the Antarctic Peninsula, and between southwest of the nearest point of the South Orkney Islands. By the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, the islands' sovereignty is neither recognized nor disputed by the signatories and they are free for use by any signatory for non-military purposes. The islands have been claimed by the United Kingdom since 1908 and as part of the British Antarctic Territory since 1962. Glacier Terminus
A glacier terminus, toe, or snout, is the end of a glacier at any given point in time. Although glaciers seem motionless to the observer, in reality glaciers are in endless motion and the glacier terminus is always either advancing or retreating. The location of the terminus is often directly related to glacier mass balance, which is based on the amount of snowfall which occurs in the accumulation zone of a glacier, as compared to the amount that is melted in the ablation zone. The position of a glacier terminus is also impacted by localized or regional temperature change over time. Orcho Glacier ( bg, ледник Орчо, lednik Orcho, ) is long and wide glacier on the east side of Ravelin Ridge on Clarence Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica situated north of Treskavets Glacier and south-southwest of Banari Glacier. Treskavets Glacier ( bg, ледник Трескавец, lednik Treskavets, ) is long and wide glacier on the east side of Ravelin Ridge on Clarence Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica situated north of Highton Glacier and south of Orcho Glacier. Ilyo Point ( bg, нос Ильо, ‘Nos Ilyo’ \'nos 'i-lyo\ is the narrow rocky point projecting 600 m east-northeastwards from the east coast of Clarence Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It forms the south side of the entrance to Smith Cove. The point is named after the Bulgarian rebel leader Ilyo Voyvoda (Iliya Popgeorgiev, 1805-1898). Sugarloaf Island (South Shetland Islands)
Sugarloaf Island is a conspicuous small island which lies close to the east side of Clarence Island, midway between Cape Lloyd and Cape Bowles, in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It lies 3.2 km north of Lebed Point, on the northern side of the entrance to Istros Bay. The name was in use by American and British sealers as early as 1822 and is now well established. Important Bird Area An 82 ha site, comprising all of Sugarloaf Island, the neighbouring ice-free coastal area of Clarence Island and the intervening marine area, has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports a total of about 70,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins, as well as some 25,000 pairs of southern fulmars on the adjacent ice-free slopes of Clarence Island. Antarctic Place-names Commission
The Antarctic Place-names Commission was established by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute in 1994, and since 2001 has been a body affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria.
