Gertrude Roberts
Gertrude Roberts (September 16, 1930 – November 6, 2019) was an educator and politician in Dominica. Life She was born in Delices and received her national teacher's certificate in 1952. She pursued further studies, completing an advanced certificate at the Leeward Islands Teacher's College and earning a certificate in educational studies from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne's Institute of Education. She taught and was principal at various schools across Dominica. She also served as program coordinator for the National Council of Women for Dominica. Roberts received a National Service Award in 1973. Dominica ( or ; Kalinago: ; french: Dominique; Dominican Creole French: ), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island country in the Caribbean. Delices
Delices is a small village in Dominica. It is located in the south-east of the island, between La Plaine and Petite Savanne. The village's name derives from the French words ''délices'', translated as "delights", or ''délice'' meaning "a delightful thing". Hurricane David was an extremely deadly hurricane which caused massive loss of life in the Dominican Republic in August 1979, and was the most intense hurricane to make landfall in the country in recorded history. A Cape Verde hurricane that reached Category 5 hurricane status on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale, David was the fourth named tropical cyclone, second hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 1979 Atlantic hurricane season, traversing through the Leeward Islands, Greater Antilles, and East Coast of the United States during late August and early September. David was the first hurricane to affect the Lesser Antilles since Hurricane Inez in 1966. United Workers' Party (Dominica)
The United Workers' Party is a centrist political party in Dominica. As of the 2022 general election, the party is not represented in the House of Assembly of Dominica, after boycotting the general election. The past Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly is Lennox Linton. The United Workers' Party with less than 34% of the votes was the majority party in Dominica's parliament from 1995 until 2000, led by party co-founder Edison James as Prime Minister of Dominica. The party now has a new leader, Thomson Fontaine who is the current Leader of the Opposition. In the 2014 general elections, the party won 6 seats out of the 21. Gretta Roberts
Gretta Roberts, sometimes spelled Greta Roberts, is a Dominican educator and politician. She is currently a member of the Cabinet of Dominica, serving as minister of culture, youth, sports, and community development. Biography Roberts was born in Grand Fond, a constituency in southeastern Dominica. Her mother, Gertrude Roberts, was a politician and member of the House of Assembly of Dominica who later served as minister for community development and women's affairs. Roberts attended Grand Fond Primary School and then moved to the Convent High School. She briefly left the island and stayed on Saint Vincent after Hurricane David in 1979, before returning to Dominica and graduating from Dominica Grammar School. She began working as a teacher in 1980, eventually becoming principal of Goodwill Primary School in Roseau, where she taught for 15 years.
