Carl Gerstacker
Carl Gerstacker (August 6, 1916 – April 23, 1995) was an American chemical industrialist and philanthropist who expanded the American multinational conglomerate Dow Chemical. A graduate of the University of Michigan, he served on Dow's board of directors for 34 years, 17 as chairman. He also shared his knowledge and experience by serving on boards of dozens of civic organizations and corporations. Early years Carl Gerstacker was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1916. He was the younger of two children of Rollin Gerstacker, an engineer at a boat machinery manufacturer, and his wife, Edna Helen Uhinck. From age 5, Carl and sister Elsa spent their summers in Midland, Michigan with their Aunt Elsa and Uncle James. At the time, James Pardee was chairman of the board at Dow Chemical. Carl Eduard Adolph Gerstaecker
Carl Eduard Adolph Gerstaecker (30 August 1828 – 20 June 1895) was a German zoologist, entomologist and professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Berlin and afterwards the University of Greifswald. Biography Gerstaecker was born in Berlin, where he studied medicine and natural sciences, receiving a PhD in 1855 as a student of Johann Christoph Friedrich Klug. In 1856 he obtained his habilitation for zoology, and soon afterwards, became a curator at the Museum für Naturkunde, Zoological Museum of Humboldt University. In 1864 he began work as a lecturer at the Landwirtschaftlichen Lehranstalt (Agricultural Educational Facility) in Berlin. In 1874, he became an associate professor for zoology at the University of Berlin, and in 1876, a professor of zoology at the University of Greifswald. He died in Greifswald. Friedrich Gerstäcker
Friedrich Gerstäcker (May 10, 1816 in Hamburg – May 31, 1872 in Braunschweig) was a German traveler, novelist, and adventurer. Biography He was the son of Friedrich Gerstäcker (1790–1825), a celebrated opera singer. After being apprenticed to a commercial house, he learned farming in Saxony. In 1837, however, not yet 21 and with a yen for adventure instilled from reading Robinson Crusoe, he went to America and wandered over a large part of the United States, supporting himself by whatever work came to hand. He became fireman on a steamboat, deck hand, farmer, silversmith, and merchant. After wandering through most of the United States, spending some time as a hunter and trapper in the Indian territory, and in 1842 keeping a hotel at Point Coupée, Louisiana, he returned to Germany six adventurous years later in 1843.
