Gerry Sullivan (Australian Politician)
Gerald James Sullivan (20 July 1943 – 1 September 2000) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Wollongong in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1991 to 1999. Sullivan was born in Binnaway to parents Leicester and Nina. He was educated at Binnaway and Coonabarabran before attending the University of Wollongong, where he received a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma of Accountancy. He also attended Sydney Teachers College, and taught in the state system from 1964 to 1991. He joined the Coogee branch of the Labor Party in 1961. On 12 January 1968 he married Rhonda Lock, with whom he had three children. In 1991, Sullivan was selected as the Labor candidate for the state seat of Wollongong, at that time held by independent MP Frank Arkell. Sullivan won convincingly, and was easily re-elected in 1995. Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch)
The Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), also known as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the members of the party caucus, comprising all party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The party factions have a strong influence on the election of the leader. The leader's position is dependent on the continuing support of the caucus (and party factions) and the leader may be deposed by failing to win a vote of confidence of parliamentary members. By convention, the premier sits in the Legislative Assembly, and is the leader of the party controlling a majority in that house. Frank Arkell
Francis Neville (Frank) Arkell (13 September 193526 June 1998) was an Australian politician. Arkell was a long-serving Lord Mayor of Wollongong and an independent member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Wollongong. In 1998 Arkell was violently murdered in his home, aged 62 years. His home was exposed as the venue of pedophile parties with some boys brought from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, with Arkell identified as the one paying money to the traffickers. Arkell was a Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy, according to his biography on the Parliament of NSW site. Early life Arkell was born on 13 September 1935 in Port Kembla, New South Wales. Wollongong ( ), colloquially referred to as The Gong, is a city located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. The name is believed to originate from the Dharawal language, meaning either 'five islands/clouds', 'ground near water' or 'sound of the sea'. Col Markham
Colin William Markham (4 June 1940 – 6 September 2020) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 2003, representing the electorates of Keira (1988–1999) and Wollongong (1999–2003). He was a parliamentary secretary in the first two terms of the Carr Labor government. Early years Markham was born in Wollongong, the son of Vincent Markham and his wife Iris, and studied at West Wollongong Public School and Wollongong Junior Technical College (now Keira High School). He dropped out of school at fifteen, and took up an apprenticeship as an electrical fitter with the Electricity Commission of New South Wales. He worked in the Kemira mines for two years after the completion of his apprenticeship, before shifting to the Coalcliff mines, where he spent a further 24 years. Coogee is a beachside suburb of local government area City of Randwick 8 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is typically associated as being part of the Eastern Suburbs region. The Tasman Sea and Coogee Bay along with Coogee Beach lie towards the eastern side of the suburb.
