Gerry Murray
Gerry Murray (September 30, 1920August 9, 2019) was an American roller derby skater. She played for most of her career with the New York Chiefs, becoming a popular derby star known for her glamour as well as her on-track rivalry with Midge "Toughie" Brasuhn. Murray was one of the first American sportswomen to sign an endorsement deal and was inducted to the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 1956. Early life Geraldine Murray was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 30, 1920. Her parents were Raymond and Leila (Zika) Murray, but she was raised primarily by her grandmother, Grace Jones, after her parents' divorce when she was six years old. Murray played softball as a young child and was recruited for the Russell Sporting Goods team, which won a state championship. Roller Derby
Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly in the United States. Game play consists of a series of short scrimmages (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who uniquely wears a star on the helmet) and four blockers to skate counter-clockwise around a track. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Toughie Brasuhn
Marjorie Clair Louise Theresa Brasuhn Monte (January 27, 1923 – 9 August 1971), known as Midge "Toughie" Brasuhn, was a roller derby skater. Roller Derby Hall Of Fame
The Roller Derby Hall of Fame, also known as the National Roller Derby Hall of Fame, was founded in 1952,William H. Young and Nancy K. Young, ''World War II and the Postwar Years in America'', p.596 by the editors of the ''Roller Derby News'' paper. Johnny Rosasco and Josephine Bogash, Josephine "Ma" Bogash were the first two skaters to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was initially displayed at Madison Square Garden, where the home offices of the sport were located. Skaters could only be inducted after their retirement. North High School, usually referred to simply as ''North'', is a public secondary school located in Des Moines, Iowa. It is one of five secondary schools under the district of the Des Moines Public Schools. The school's mascot is a polar bear and the school competes in the Central Iowa Metro League conference. History North High started as the Forest Home School with four rooms, three departments (primary, intermediate, and higher grades), and three teachers. In 1885, Dr. John A. Bill Bogash
Bill "Flash" Bogash (November 22, 1916 – March 20, 2009) was a roller derby skater and coach. Born in Chicago, he began his career in 1935 during the Great Depression, and skated until 1958. Bogash's career began after he and his mother attended the first Transcontinental Roller Derby in Chicago on August 13, 1935, a six-week race that tracked skaters' total distance traveled in laps around a track on a US map. He and his mother, Josephine 'Ma' Bogash joined the second race in September of that year, in Kansas. After racing with many teams throughout the 1940s, Bogash led the New York Chiefs to their first Roller Derby World Championship in 1949. Towards the end of his career, Bogash skated for the Los Angeles Braves. After retirement in 1958, Bogash went on to be a restaurateur in Los Angeles, California, with some of the most incredible steaks and twice-cooked potatoes on Earth!
