Gerry Cosby
Gerard Finton David Cosby (May 15, 1909 in Roxbury, Massachusetts – November 26, 1996) was an American ice hockey player and businessman. Cosby played goaltender for the Massachusetts Rangers, the team that won the 1933 World Ice Hockey Championships, representing the United States of America. His outstanding performance (allowing one goal in five games) helped lead the United States to its first, and only, gold medal at the World Ice Hockey Championships. In the late 1930s, he played for the New York Rovers of the Eastern League. He later served as a practice goaltender for the New York Rangers, New York Americans and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. In 1935 he was voted most valuable player while tending goal for the Wembley Lions in England. In 1936 he was invited to join the United States Olympic team but he was unable to accept. Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. IIHF Hall Of Fame
The IIHF Hall of Fame is a hall of fame operated by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It was founded in 1997, and has resided at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto since 1998. Prior to 1997, the IIHF housed exhibits at the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston, Ontario. Inductions are made annually at the medal presentation day of the Ice Hockey World Championships. As of 2021, the IIHF has inducted 237 members. 1938 World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1938 Ice Hockey World Championships were held between February 11 and February 20, 1938, at Štvanice Stadium in Prague, Czechoslovakia. It marked the 30th anniversary of the IIHF, and a special celebration was held with famous hockey players from all over Europe in attendance. Also a yearbook was produced for the twenty-two member nations which documented which European country had the most hockey clubs (Czechoslovakia 361) and the most artificial rinks (Great Britain 21). Fourteen teams participated in this World Championship. It was first divided into three preliminary round groups — two groups of five and a group with four teams. In the preliminary round, the top three teams in each group advanced to the second round. The nine teams advancing to the second round were divided into three groups of three teams each. Wembley Lions
The Wembley Lions were an English ice hockey team. History The team were founded in 1934 but showed a continuity with the London Lions team which had played at various venues since 1924. The Wembley team were based at the newly built Empire Pool in Wembley Park, which they shared with the Wembley Monarchs until 1950. The team entered the English National League, winning it in 1935-36 and 1936–37. After a break during World War II, they returned and again topped the league in 1951–52. In 1954, Lions joined the new British National League, which they won this championship in 1956/7. The League collapsed in 1960, and faced with the prospect of no regular league matches, the team folded.
