Gerry Bostock
Gerry Bostock (15 July 1942 – 16 May 2014) was a Bundjalung activist, playwright, poet and filmmaker. Early life Bostock was born on 15 July 1942 in Grafton, New South Wales, of the Bundjalung people. After spending nine years in the Australian Army, Bostock moved to Redfern, a suburb of Sydney, where he became involved in political activism. Activism and career Bostock was involved in the struggles of Indigenous Australian people and took part in setting up the National Black Theatre in Sydney. He was also known as a healer. He made a substantial contribution to Australian literature as a playwright, poet and writer. His 1976 play ''Here Comes the Nigger'' was performed at the Black Theatre Arts and Culture Centre in Redfern, starring Athol Compton and Julie McGregor, with Marcia Langton in a supporting role. Bundjalung People
The Bundjalung people, also spelt Bunjalung, Badjalang and Bandjalang, are Aboriginal Australians who are the original custodians of the northern coastal area of New South Wales, Australia, located approximately northeast of Sydney, an area that includes the Bundjalung National Park. Bundjalung people all share descent from ancestors who once spoke as their first, preferred language one or more of the dialects of the Lower-Richmond branch of the Yugambeh-Bandjalang language, Bundjalung language family. Julie McGregor
Julie Anne McGregor (born 26 November 1948) is an Australian television actress and comedian, noted for her roles in comedy. Career In the 1970s, McGregor appeared in the Australian sketch comedy ''The Naked Vicar Show''. In the 1980s McGregor appeared in television soap operas including '' A Country Practice'', '' Punishment'' and '' Sons and Daughters''. Aboriginal Australians
Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders collectively. It is generally used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed. Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically and culturally distinct, despite extensive cultural exchange with some of the Aboriginal groups. Lousy Little Sixpence
''Lousy Little Sixpence'' is a 1983 Australian documentary film about Australian history that details the early years of the Stolen Generations and the struggle of Aboriginal Australians against the Aboriginal Protection Board in the 1930s. The film's title references the amount of pocket money that Aboriginal children were to be paid for their forced labour, although few ever received it. Overview ''Lousy Little Sixpence'' begins with the testimonies of survivors of the Stolen Generations who were born in the early 1900s. Black Women's Action
Roberta "Bobbi" Sykes (16 August 194314 November 2010) was an Australian poet and author. She was a lifelong campaigner for Indigenous land rights, as well as human rights and women's rights. Early life and education Born Roberta Barkley Patterson in Townsville, Queensland, sometime in the 1940s, Sykes was raised by her white mother, Rachel Patterson, and never knew her father. Sykes says in her autobiography that his identity is unknown, and her mother told her a number of different accounts about her father; variously that he was Fijian, Papuan, African-American, and Native American. The most consistent and plausible version was that he was African-American soldier stationed in Australia during World War Two. Marcia Langton
Marcia Lynne Langton (born 1951) is an Australian academic. she is the Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne. Regarded as one of Australia's top intellectuals, Langton is also known for her activism in the Indigenous rights arena. Early life and education Marcia Langton was born in 1951 to Kathleen (née Waddy) and grew up in south-central Queensland and Brisbane as a descendant of the Yiman and Bidjara heritage, both groups being Aboriginal Australian peoples. Her father had no presence in her life. Her mother married Scots-born, ex-Korean War veteran Douglas Langton when Marcia was a year old.
