Gerrie Sonnekus
Gerhardus Hermanus Hendrikus 'Gerrie' Sonnekus (born 1 February 1953) is a former South African rugby union player. Playing career Sonnekus finished his schooling in Welkom and studied at the University of the Free State. He played his first provincial match for the Free State in 1974 and continued to represent the union until 1985. During his career with the Free State he played in five Currie Cup finals, being on the losing side in 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1981. In 1976 he was a member of the Free State team that won the Currie Cup final against Western Province and gained is winners medal when he went on as a replacement for Eben Jansen during the match. With his retirement at the end of the 1985 season, Sonnekus was the Free State record holder for most matches of 160, most matches as captain of 63, most tries of 69 and most Currie Cup matches of 104. Senekal
Senekal is a town situated on the banks of the Sand River in the eastern part of the Free State province of South Africa. It was named after Commandant FP Senekal. It is the second largest town in Setsoto Municipality after Ficksburg, the largest town and capital of Setsoto. Senekal lies on the N5 national road between Winburg on the west and Bethlehem to the east. Western Province (known for sponsorship reasons as DHL Western Province) is a South African professional rugby union team based in Newlands, Cape Town, that participates in the annual Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup tournaments. Founded in 1883, the team has won multiple titles, a record of 34 Currie Cup titles including the inaugural competition, the Vodacom Cup, the Absa Nite Series, and the Lion Cup. Naas Botha
Hendrik Egnatius 'Naas' Botha (born 27 February 1958) is a South African former rugby union player, who played for Northern Transvaal and South Africa (the Springboks). He was voted ''Rugby Player of the Year'' in 1979, 1981, 1985 and 1987. Botha mostly played in the fly-half position and is now a rugby commentator for the South African M-Net and Supersport TV channels. He is also the Head coach of the Men's and women's national rugby union team of India. Danie Gerber
Danie Gerber (born 14 April 1958 in Port Elizabeth, Union of South Africa) is a former South African rugby union player, who played for South Africa between 1980 and 1992. He played mainly at inside or outside centre, but also on the wing. His international career was severely limited because of South Africa's sporting isolation caused by apartheid. He won only 24 caps for South Africa (scoring 19 tries), despite playing internationally for 12 years. However despite this, in 2007 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. Schalk Willem Petrus Burger Snr. (born 6 October 1955) is a South African former rugby union player. Playing career Burger was born in Cape Town and received his schooling in Paarl, at Paarl Gimnasium. In 1973 het represented the schools rugby team at the Craven Week tournament. He made his senior provincial debut in 1974 for and in 1975 he enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch for a BCom degree, representing the Maties on the rugby field. Jannie Breedt
Johannes Christoffel Breedt (born 4 June 1959) is a South African former rugby union player. Playing career Breedt played for Northern Transvaal and Transvaal in the South African provincial competitions. He made his debut for Northern Transvaal in 1981 and in 1985 he relocated to Transvaal. He played 118 matches for Transvaal and captained the side on a 102 occasions, the first player to captain the province more than a hundred times. He led his team to four Currie Cup finals, finishing runner–up on each occasion. Ellis Park Stadium (known as Emirates Airline Park for sponsorship reasons) is a rugby union and association football stadium in the city of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. William James McBride, CBE, better known as Willie John McBride (born 6 June 1940) is a former rugby union footballer who played as a Lock (rugby union), lock for Ireland national rugby union team, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions. He played 63 Test match (rugby union), Tests for Ireland including eleven as captain, and toured with the Lions five times; a record that gave him 17 Lions Test caps. 1974 British Lions Tour To South Africa
In 1974, the British & Irish Lions toured South Africa, with matches in South West Africa and Rhodesia. Under the leadership of Willie John McBride, the Lions went through the tour undefeated, winning 21 of their 22 matches and being held to a draw in the final match, albeit in controversial circumstances. The 1974 squad became known as 'The Invincibles' and regarded as the greatest rugby tour in history.
