Germany Calling
''Germany Calling'' was an English language propaganda radio programme, broadcast by Nazi German radio to audiences in the British Isles and North America during the Second World War. Every broadcast began with the station announcement: "Germany calling! Here are the Reichssender Hamburg, station Bremen". Today, it is best known for its employment of several radio presenters jointly known as Lord Haw-Haw — most notably, William Joyce, who was German radio's most prominent English language speaker and to whom the name gradually came to be exclusively applied. The regular content included news and jazz music (which was banned, as " Negermusik", on German domestic stations). William Joyce
William Brooke Joyce (24 April 1906 – 3 January 1946), nicknamed Lord Haw-Haw, was an American-born fascist and Nazi propaganda broadcaster during the Second World War. After moving from New York to Ireland and subsequently to England, Joyce became a member of Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists (BUF) from 1932, before finally moving to Germany shortly before the war where he took German citizenship in 1940. After being captured following the end of the war in Europe, Joyce was convicted in the United Kingdom of high treason in 1945 and sentenced to death, with the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords both upholding his conviction. He was hanged in Wandsworth Prison by Albert Pierrepoint on 3 January 1946, making him the last person to be executed for treason in the United Kingdom. International broadcasting, in a limited extent, began during World War I, when German and British stations broadcast press communiqués using Morse code. With the severing of Germany's undersea cables, the wireless telegraph station in Nauen was the country's sole means of long-distance communication. The US Navy Radio Service radio station in New Brunswick, Canada, transmitted the 'Fourteen Points' by wireless to Nauen in 1917. In turn, Nauen station broadcast the news of the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II on November 10, 1918. The Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (RRG; ''Reich Broadcasting Corporation'') was a national network of German regional public radio and television broadcasting companies active from 1925 until 1945. Axis Sally was the generic nickname given to women radio personalities who broadcast English-language propaganda on behalf of the European Axis Powers during World War II. These included: *Mildred Gillars, a German-American who broadcast for Germany. She was "the first woman in US history to be convicted of treason" by the United States and "on 8 March 1949 was sentenced to ten to thirty years' imprisonment." *Rita Zucca, an Italian-American who broadcast for Italy On their radio shows, the two Axis Sally personalities would typically alternate between swing music and propaganda messages aimed at American troops. Charlie and his Orchestra (also referred to as the "Templin band" and "Bruno and His Swinging Tigers") were a National Socialist German Workers Party, Nazi-sponsored Germany, German propaganda Swing (genre), swing band.
