This article concerns the Germany national football team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Qualification Germany had to play against England, Finland, Albania and Greece, managed by fellow German Otto Rehhagel. It was to be an uneasy group, so much so as only the first placed team could qualify automatically. The start was promising with four wins in a row, including a 1-0 win against England at Wembley. Since England could only manage a draw away at Finland, automatic qualification should have been a foregone conclusion. In the next game, there was a 2-2 draw against Finland, which was ironed out by winning away in Albania. In the following game, a draw against England would have seen Germany qualify automatically from this match. After nine minutes, Germany took the lead with a goal by Carsten Jancker but England soon equalised with a Michael Owen goal. The Germany national football team (german: link=no, Deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft) represents Germany in men's international football and played its first match in 1908. The team is governed by the German Football Association (''Deutscher Fußball-Bund''), founded in 1900. Jens Gerhard Lehmann (; born 10 November 1969) is a German former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He was a member of Arsenal's " Invincibles", playing every match of their unbeaten title-winning season. Jörg Böhme (born 22 January 1974) is a German former footballer who played as midfielder, and who most recently was the manager of Energie Cottbus. Club career Böhme was born in Hohenmölsen, East Germany. As a professional footballer, Böhme played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena, 1. FC Nürnberg, Eintracht Frankfurt, 1860 München, Arminia Bielefeld, FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach. On club level he won two German Cup trophies with FC Schalke 04. Michael Ballack (; born 26 September 1976) is a German former professional footballer. He is among the top goal scorers in the history of the German national team. Christian Ziege
Christian Ziege (; born 1 February 1972) is a German football manager and former player. He most recently coached FC Pinzgau. A defender, he started his playing career at FC Bayern Munich, where he won two Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Cup before moving to A.C. Milan, winning an Italian ''Scudetto''. In 1999, he joined Middlesbrough of the English Premier League, where he was voted the club's Player of the Year in his only season. Marko Rehmer (born 29 April 1972) is a German former professional footballer who played mainly as a right-back. Club career Rehmer was born in East Berlin. In his youth he played for hometown 1. Christoph Metzelder
Christoph Tobias Metzelder (born 5 November 1980) is a German former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. Most of his professional career, which was spent mostly at Borussia Dortmund, was blighted by injuries. He did manage, however, to appear 47 times for the Germany national team, representing the country at two World Cups and Euro 2008.
