Germans In Jamaica
Germans in Jamaica or German Jamaicans, are Jamaicans of German ancestry. The population was established in the 1830s when the abolition of slavery resulted in a labour shortage on the Caribbean island. Lord Seaford, who owned the Montpelier Estate and Shettlewood Pen in St. James established a European settlement in Westmoreland in order to combat the shortage, and over one thousand Germans migrated to Jamaica. The German language is no longer used on the island, but some German words have entered the Jamaican vernacular. Many Jamaicans in Seaford and German Town in Westmoreland carry heavy European features such as blue eyes, blond hair, freckles and white skin, as a result of the German genetic influences. Westmoreland Parish
Westmoreland is the westernmost parish in Jamaica, located on the south side of the island. It is situated south of Hanover, southwest of Saint James, and northwest of Saint Elizabeth, in the county of Cornwall. The chief town and capital is Savanna-la-Mar. Negril, a famous tourist destination, is also situated in the parish. History The earliest inhabitants of Westmoreland were the Arawak and Ciboney Indians. The Ciboney were first to arrive, from the coast of South America, around 500 BC. Known as "cave dwellers", they lived along the cliffs of Negril. The labyrinth of caves and passageways beneath what is now the Xtabi Hotel in Negril are one of the first known settlements of Ciboney Indians in Jamaica. European Jamaican
White Jamaicans also known as European-Jamaicans are Jamaican people whose ancestry lies within the continent of Europe, most notably Great Britain and Ireland. There are also communities of people who are descendants of people who arrived from Spain, Germany and Portugal. Historically, White Jamaicans made up a much larger percentage of the population, forming a majority for most of the 17th century, when Jamaica was conquered by the British. After the Spanish colonized the island in the 1600s, the English began taking an interest in the island and, following a failed attempt to conquer Santo Domingo on Hispaniola, Admiral William Penn and General Robert Venables led an invasion of Jamaica in 1655. In Nazi German terminology, ''Volksdeutsche'' () were "people whose language and culture had German origins but who did not hold German citizenship". The term is the nominalised plural of ''volksdeutsch'', with ''Volksdeutsche'' denoting a singular female, and ''Volksdeutsche(r)'', a singular male. Herbert Wellesley Eldemire, CD (16 October 193020 May 2010), was a Jamaican politician who served as independent Jamaica's first Minister of Health from 1962 to 1972. Early life and education Eldemire was born to father Arthur Wellesley Eldemire and mother Alice Hyacinth Eldemire (née Holmes) in Montego Bay, Jamaica on 16 October 1930. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. George Stiebel (1821-1896) was a Jamaican trader and entrepreneur who became a millionaire from gold mining in South America. Stiebel is notoriously named Jamaica's first black millionaire. Family His parents were Sigismund Stiebel (1790-1859), a Jew who emigrated from Germany and his housekeeper, a Jamaican of African descent. Sigismund was active as a trader in South America and the West Indies. He later married Eliza Jacob, née Mocatta (1811–1858); the couple's children Adeline, Daniel, Jacob and Rebecca were born between 1837 and 1844. Sigismund was buried three days after his death in London's Balls Pond Jewish Cemetery. His paternal grandfather was Isaac Daniel Stiebel (1764 or 1766-March 26, 1850). Julian Radlein (born February 6, 1981 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a former Canadian Football League fullback who played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He attended Lincoln Heights Public School and Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo, Ontario. In 2003, Radlein won the Frank M.
