She was Keel laying, laid down on 30 March 1940 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg as yard number 541, Ceremonial ship launching, launched on 20 February 1941 and Ship commissioning, commissioned on 10 April 1941 under ''Oberleutnant'' Johann Jebsen.
