German Fleet Tender Adolf Lüderitz
The ''Adolf Lüderitz'' was a fleet tender of the Kriegsmarine, sometimes also known as an aviso. She was named after the Bremen businessman Adolf Lüderitz (1834–1886), whose land acquisition in 1883 in what is now Namibia led to the establishment of the German protected area German South West Africa the following year. Development and design For their growing number of small craft, the Reichsmarine and later the Kriegsmarine needed appropriately equipped escort ships for each flotilla, which served the boat crews as accommodation and the boats as fuel, torpedo, mine, ammunition, fresh water and food depot. Initially, from 1927 onwards, the old '' Nordsee'' tender was converted accordingly and replaced by the newly built '' Tsingtau'' in 1934. In January 1939, the was added as a second ship. Franz Adolf Eduard Lüderitz (16 July 1834 – end of October 1886) was a German merchant and the founder of German South West Africa, Imperial Germany's first colony. The coastal town of Lüderitz, located in the ǁKaras Region of southern Namibia, is named after him. Early life Lüderitz was born on 16 July 1834 in the German city-state of Bremen to tobacco merchant Adolf Lüderitz and his wife Wilhelmine. He had one younger brother who later became his assistant. After graduating from school, Lüderitz attended the ''Handelsschule'' (Merchant's Gymnasium) in Bremen and then worked as an intern in his father's business. Between 1854 and 1859, he travelled among tobacco bourses in North America. He took up a position in Mexico, but the trader soon went bankrupt. Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction. It is often marked with a ceremony attended by dignitaries from the shipbuilding company and the ultimate owners of the ship. Keel laying is one of the four specially celebrated events in the life of a ship; the others are launching, commissioning and decommissioning. HNoMS Uredd (P41)
HMS ''P41'' was a Royal Navy U-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrong. She was transferred to the exiled Royal Norwegian Navy before completion and renamed HNoMS ''Uredd''. She and one of the B-class in 1940 have so far been the only Norwegian submarines to have been sunk. Service history Ordered on 11 March 1940, the submarine was laid down at the Vickers-Armstrongs shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness on 15 October 1940, and launched on 24 August 1941. She was transferred to Norwegian command on 7 December 1941. She served mostly as a patrol craft off the coast of Nazi-occupied Norway, eventually completing a total of seven successful missions for the Royal Norwegian Navy, sinking several German ships.
