The German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ Tokyo) is a German research institute based in Tokyo, focused on the study of modern Japan in a global context. Franz Waldenberger
Franz Waldenberger is professor for Japanese economy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the director of the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ). Career Waldenberger began to research the Japanese economy in 1992 when he became a research assistant at the DIJ. He examined industrial organization and the employment and financial system of Japan. His habilitation thesis was on the subject of "Organisation und Evolution arbeitsteiliger Systeme – Erkenntnisse aus der japanischen Wirtschaftsentwicklung" ("The organisation and evolution of division of labour – insights from Japanese economic development"). In 1997, he became professor for Japanese economy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Germany–Japan Relations
Germany–Japan relations (; ), also referred to as German-Japanese relations, were officially established in 1861 with the first ambassadorial visit to Japan from Prussia (which predated the formation of the German Empire in 1866/1870). Japan modernized rapidly after the Meiji Restoration of 1867, often using German models through intense intellectual and cultural exchange. After Japan aligned itself with Britain in 1900, Germany and Japan became enemies in World War I. Japan declared war on the German Empire in 1914 and seized key German possessions in China and the Pacific. In the 1930s, both countries adopted aggressive militaristic attitudes toward their respective regions. This led to a rapprochement and, eventually, a political and military alliance that included Italy: the "Axis". Japanese studies (Japanese: ) or Japan studies (sometimes Japanology in Europe), is a sub-field of area studies or East Asian studies involved in social sciences and humanities research on Japan. It incorporates fields such as the study of Japanese language, culture, history, literature, art, music and science. Its roots may be traced back to the Dutch at Dejima, Nagasaki in the Edo period. The foundation of the Asiatic Society of Japan at Yokohama in 1872 by men such as Ernest Satow and Frederick Victor Dickins was an important event in the development of Japanese studies as an academic discipline.
