German 1,000 Guineas
The German 1,000 Guineas is a Group 2 flat horse race in Germany open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run at Düsseldorf over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. It is Germany's equivalent of the 1,000 Guineas Stakes, a famous race in England. History The event was established in 1919, and it was originally called the Kisasszony-Rennen. It was initially held at Grunewald, and it moved to Hoppegarten in 1923. The race was renamed the Schwarzgold-Rennen in 1941, in honour of the previous year's winner Schwarzgold. It was cancelled in 1945 and 1946, and it was staged at Cologne and Krefeld in the two years thereafter. It was transferred to Düsseldorf in 1949. The present system of race grading was introduced in Germany in 1972, and the Schwarzgold-Rennen was classed at Group 3 level. It was promoted to Group 2 status in 1985. Willie Carson
William Fisher Hunter Carson, OBE (born 16 November 1942) is a retired jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. Life and career Best known as "Willie", Carson was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1942. He was apprenticed to Captain Gerald Armstrong at his stables at Tupgill, North Yorkshire. His first winner in Britain was Pinker's Pond in a seven-furlong apprentice handicap at Catterick Bridge Racecourse on 19 July 1962. He was British Champion Jockey five times (1972, 1973, 1978, 1980 and 1983), won 17 British Classic Races, and passed 100 winners in a season 23 times for a total of 3,828 wins, making him the fourth most successful jockey in Great Britain. Richard Hannon, Sr
Richard Michael Hannon (born 1945), known as Richard Hannon Sr. to distinguish him from his son, is a former British horse trainer. He was British flat racing Champion Trainer four times, achieved more than a century of victories in a season 20 times, a double century five times, and turned out 32 Royal Ascot winners. He operated out of Herridge Racing Stables, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, with a smaller yard at Everleigh on the edge of Salisbury Plain. Richard Hughes (jockey)
Richard Hughes (born 11 January 1973) is a retired Irish jockey and current racehorse trainer who is based at Lambourn in Berkshire, England. Born in Dublin, he is the son of successful National Hunt trainer, Dessie Hughes. Hughes became British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2012 and retained that title in 2013, when he rode more than 200 winners in the season, and again in 2014. Riding career Hughes started pony racing aged seven, having his first win aboard Chestnut Lady in a six furlong race at Wexford. His first ride in the senior ranks was in a six furlong maiden at Naas on 19 March 1988, on a debutant called Scath Na Greine. He finished tenth. Darley Stud is located at Dalham Hall, the global breeding operation owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai and vice-president of the United Arab Emirates. Clive Brittain
Clive Brittain (born 15 December 1934) is a retired British race-horse trainer. He started in racing as an apprentice in 1949, and became a licensed trainer from 1972 after working for Noel Murless. He trained at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk and sent out his final runner prior to retirement in October 2015. His best-known horse is Pebbles, winner of the 1,000 Guineas in 1984 and the Breeders' Cup Turf in 1985. Philip Robinson (jockey)
Philip Peter Robinson (born 10 January 1961) is a former English flat racing jockey. The son of Peter Robinson, a jockey and trainer, he rode his first winner in 1978 at Great Yarmouth. He was British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 1979 and 1980. One of his most famous victories was his win on Pebbles, trained by Clive Brittain, in the 1984 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. His second victory in this race came in 2001 on Ameerat, trained by Michael Jarvis. Robinson rode in Hong Kong for six years from 1987, becoming Champion Jockey there on two occasions, in 1988-89 and 1989–90, making him the only English Jockey to achieve this feat. Philip Robinson is well respected for having a great tactical understanding of and approach to race-riding. Crimplene (horse)
Crimplene (11 January 1997 – 2005) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from May 1999 until November 2000 she competed in seven countries and won six of her sixteen races. In the summer of 2000 she produced her best form, winning the German 1000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Nassau Stakes. She was retired to stud at the end of the year and died in 2005 at the age of eight. Background Crimplene was a dark-coated chestnut filly with a white blaze bred in Ireland by her owner Marwan Al-Maktoum. She was one of the best horses sired by Lion Cavern, an American-bred stallion who won the Horris Hill Stakes and the Greenham Stakes when trained in France. Andreas Schütz
Andreas Schütz (born 19 February 1968) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. From a prominent racing family, he is the fourth generation to train professionally. Andreas Schütz started out as an amateur jockey, winning four German championships from 1984–1987 and the European championship in 1987. In 1992 he began working as an assistant trainer for his father Bruno Schütz who had built one of the Germany's most successful public training stables. Due to health problems, his father retired and in 1998 Andreas took over the running of the stable. Highly successful, Andreas Schütz has won numerous German Group one races including the five wins in both the Deutsches Derby and the Preis der Diana. Four times he has been his country's annual leading trainer in wins.
