Germaine Arnaktauyok
Germaine Arnaktauyok (born in Maniitsoq, Greenland in 1946) is an Inuk printmaker, painter, and drawer originating from the Igloolik area of Nunavut, then the Northwest Territories. Arnaktauyok drew at an early age with any source of paper she could find. The media she works with consists of lithographs, etchings, and serigraphs that illustrate Inuit myths and traditional ways of life from her past experiences and ancestral culture. Her designs are two-dimensional revealing expressive line work illustrations that indicate personal stories incorporated in the subject of past Inuit tales. Family Until the mid 1960s, she lived with her family in a camp inland from the town where seals and caribou were plentiful for hunting. Therese Nattok and Isidore Iytok, the mother and father of Germaine Arnaktauyok, are talented carvers that contributed to the Inuit style of art. Arnaktauyok was the third of eight children. SS ''Empire Adventure'' was a 5,787 ton steamship which was built in 1920 as the ''Eastney''. She was sold to France in 1924 and renamed ''Germaine L D''. In 1931 she was sold to Italy, being renamed ''Andrea'', being seized in 1940 and renamed ''Empire Adventure''. She was torpedoed on the night of 20/21 September 1940 and sank whilst under tow on 23 September 1940. History ''Eastney'' was built by the Northumberland Shipping Co, Howdon, Wallsend, as yard number 356. She was owned and operated by the Romney Steamship Co, London. In 1924, ''Eastney'' was sold to L Dreyfus & Co, France and renamed ''Germaine L D''. On 25 March 1929, she was in collision with in the North Sea off Vlissingen, Netherlands. She was beached at Rammekens for temporary repairs to be carried out. ''Germaine L D'' was refloated the next day. On 3 March 1931, she collided with at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Germaine (olive)
The Germaine, also Ghjermana (; Ghjermana di Balagna), Ghermana, Germana, and sometimes as Romana, is a cultivar of olives grown primarily in Corsica, but also in parts of northern Italy. Genetically it is close to the cultivar Frantoio, that is grown in the Italian region of Tuscany. The Germaine has a good yield of oil, and the plant is resistant to cold weather. Synonyms The name of the olive is spelt in a number of different ways, including Ghjermana (or Ghjermana de Balagne), Ghermana and Germana. In some parts of Corsica and in Perugia, it is also referred to as Romana. Characteristics It is a cultivar of middle strength, with a spreading growth form and elliptic leaves that are short and of medium width. Germaine Tailleferre (; born Marcelle Germaine Taillefesse; 19 April 18927 November 1983) was a French composer and the only female member of the group of composers known as ''Les Six''. Biography Marcelle Germaine Taillefesse was born at Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Val-de-Marne, France, but as a young woman she changed her last name from "Taillefesse" to "Tailleferre" to spite her father, who had refused to support her musical studies. She studied piano with her mother at home, composing short works of her own, after which she began studying at the Paris Conservatory where she met Louis Durey, Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric, and Arthur Honegger. Germaine Cousin, also Germana Cousin, Germaine of Pibrac, or Germana, (1579–1601) is a French saint. She was born in 1579 to humble parents at Pibrac, a village from Toulouse.
