Gerhard Sisters
Emme Gerhard (1872–1946) and Mayme Gerhard (1876–1955), the Gerhard Sisters, were among the first women photographers to establish a studio in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1903. North Hempstead, New York
North Hempstead is one of three towns in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 237,639 at the 2020 census. History The area was first settled by Europeans around 1643 and became part of the town of Hempstead. During the American Revolution the southern part of Hempstead was primarily Tory, while the northern part, having been settled by Yankees, supported the revolution. Following the war, the Town of North Hempstead was split off in 1784. North Hempstead became more affluent with the opening of the Long Island Rail Road through to Great Neck, and the inauguration of steamboat service from Manhattan in 1836. Professional Photographers of America (PPA) is a nonprofit trade association of professional photographers. As of August 2022, PPA has 34,000 members. History 19th century The association began in December 1868 as the National Photographic Association of the United States (NPA). The group's first goal was to unite against Ambrotype patent restrictions. Although succeeding in preventing the reissue of the patent, the executive committee of the NPA became discouraged, and, the group disbanded in 1876 because of lack of interest. The Professional Photographers of America, as it is known today, was officially founded in April 1880 as the Photographers Association of America, Inc., by members of the Chicago Photographic Association and the former National Photographic Association. Clara Estella Zeiss Baumhoff (March 20, 1867 – March 27, 1919) was the founder of the Missouri Division of the International Sunshine Society; in fourteen years of leadership brought more than twenty-five thousand members into the International Sunshine Society through her press departments on Sunshine, and by her personal efforts. Biography Clara Estella Zeiss was born on March 20, 1867, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Carl Zeiss and Helen E. Dreyer (1840–1907). Mrs. C. W. Trowbridge was the first State president of the International Sunshine Society, and Baumhoff acted as treasurer and secretary, also superintendent of junior work. This State Branch was organized in 1902. The International Sunshine Society was founded in 1896, in New York, with eighteen members, by Cynthia Westover Alden. Caroline Everett Risque Janis (August 20, 1883 – April 9, 1952) was an American painter, sculptor and a member of the early 20th-century artistic group '' The Potters''. Early life Caroline Risque was the daughter of Ferdinand William Risque, born in Georgetown, D.C., and Aline Tilghman (Brooks) Risque, of Mobile, Alabama. She had two surviving sisters out of a total of five siblings: Aline Brooks Risque (1885–1964), who married Vice-Admiral Lloyd Toulmin Chalker, of New York; and Ethel Risque (b. 1889) who married John Blizard, of Ottawa. Risque went first to Miss Lockwood's kindergarten, for two years, and then she studied with a private tutor, Jennie Harris, until she was ten years old. Her secondary studies were at the Marquette High School, followed by several years at Hosmer Hall, a preparatory school in St. Louis, under Louise McNair. Amabel Anderson Arnold LL.M. (May 31, 1883 – February 18, 1936) was an American lawyer and law professor who organized the Woman's State Bar Association of Missouri, the first association of women lawyers in the world. Early life Amabel Anderson was born in Chatham, Ontario, on May 31, 1883. Her father was a natural-born United States citizen and her mother belonged to the Burgess family, of English ancestry, known among the most progressive people of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia - well educated, prosperous and of sterling quality. She had one brother, Charles. The Andersons moved to London, Ontario where Anderson attended her first two years of primary education.
