Gerhard Marx (born 1976) is a South African artist. Biography Born in 1976, he completed his master's degree in Fine Arts cum laude at the University of Cape Town in 2004. He has worked with well-known artists such as William Kentridge and the Handspring Puppet Company He currently teaches at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg. Works *The theatre piece Tshepang (Gerhard Marx - co director, Lara Foot-Newton – director) was chosen as one of the twelve feature film projects for January 2007 Screenwriters Lab by the Sundance Institute. *The play “Hear and Now” was presented at the Baxter Theatre Centre during 2005. Controversy According to Art News South Africa of April 2006, Marx considered legal action against BMW shortly after an ad campaign created by agency Ireland-Davenport allegedly infringed on his copyright. William Kentridge
William Kentridge (born 28 April 1955) is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films, especially noted for a sequence of hand-drawn animated films he produced during the 1990s. The latter are constructed by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. He continues this process meticulously, giving each change to the drawing a quarter of a second to two seconds' screen time. A single drawing will be altered and filmed this way until the end of a scene. These palimpsest-like drawings are later displayed along with the films as finished pieces of art. Kentridge has created art work as part of design of theatrical productions, both plays and operas. He has served as art director and overall director of numerous productions, collaborating with other artists, puppeteers and others in creating productions that combine drawings and multi-media combinations. Handspring Puppet Company
The Handspring Puppet Company is a puppetry performance and design company established in 1981 by Adrian Kohler, Basil Jones, Jon Weinberg and Jill Joubert. It is based in Cape Town, South Africa. History Jones and Kohler met at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town. At first, they designed puppets for children-targeted productions, which Jones initially disliked. Kohler "introduced him onesto the West African tradition of puppetry for adults," working with Malcolm Purkey and Barney Simon, among others. Baxter Theatre Centre
The Baxter Theatre Centre is a performing arts complex in Rondebosch, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. The Baxter, as it is often known, is part of the University of Cape Town; it is also the second largest performing arts complex in Cape Town, after the Artscape Theatre Centre. History The Baxter opened on 1 August 1977. It was named after former Mayor of Cape Town William Duncan Baxter, who left money to the University of Cape Town specifically for the construction of a theatre centre. The Lion Sleeps Tonight
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a song originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda under the title "Mbube" for the South African Gallo Record Company in 1939. Linda's original was written in isiZulu, while the English version's lyrics were written by George David Weiss. The song was adapted and covered internationally by many pop and folk revival artists in the 1950s and 1960s. It was recorded as "Wimoweh" by the Weavers in November 1951, and published by Folkways Music Publishers in December 1951. Artists who recorded various versions of the song included Henri Salvador, Jimmy Dorsey, Yma Sumac, Noro Morales, Miriam Makeba, and the Kingston Trio. In 1961, a version adapted into English with the title "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the doo-wop group the Tokens became a number-one hit in the United States. South African Artists
South is one of the cardinal directions or compass points. The direction is the opposite of north and is perpendicular to both east and west.
