Gerard Murphy (politician)
Gerard Murphy (born 25 March 1951) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Cork County Councillor since May 2009. He previously served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 2002 to 2007. Murphy was elected to the 29th Dail at the 2002 general election, ousting his Fine Gael running-mate, three-term TD Michael Creed. He was Fine Gael's deputy spokesperson on Justice. He was previously a member of Cork County Council, to which he was elected in 1991. He lost his seat at the 2007 general election to his running-mate Michael Creed. Following his defeat, he ran for election to Seanad Éireann but was defeated. He was re-elected to Cork County Council for the Kanturk local electoral area at the 2009 local elections. Gerard J. Murphy (November 1948 – 12 October 2006) MRIA was a prolific Irish mathematician. His textbooks are internationally acclaimed, and translated into different languages. He died from cancer in October 2006, at the age of 57. Research Gerard's research was in functional analysis. In recent times his research was on quantum groups and non-commutative geometry, subjects of importance both for mathematics and physics. He authored more than 70 original mathematical papers, singly or with colleagues in Ireland, Europe and North America. He will also be remembered for his bookC*-algebras and Operator Theory which was published in 1990 to worldwide acclaim. Eamon Gerard Murphy (14 October 1948 – 26 August 2013) was a Northern Irish film, television and theatre actor. Life and career Born in 1948 in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland, Murphy began his career on stage with the Glasgow Citizens Theatre, and went on to have a long association with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he was an Associate Artist, appearing in many productions, including playing Hal in Henry IV, which opened the Barbican Theatre.
