Gerard Leembruggen
Gerard Leembruggen (26 February 1897 – 13 May 1980), was a Dutch male tennis player who represented The Netherlands in the Davis Cup and the Olympic Games. He competed in the singles and doubles events at the 1924 Summer Olympics. In the singles event he had a walkover in the first round and lost in the second round to Brian Gilbert in three straight sets. With compatriot Marius van der Feen he lost in the first round against the Czechoslovakian pair Ladislav Žemla and Jan Koželuh, also in straight sets. Leembruggen competed in four Wimbledon Championships between 1924 and 1934. Tennis At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's Singles
The men's singles tennis competition was one of five tennis events at the 1924 Summer Olympics. There were 82 competitors from 27 nations. Nations were limited to four players each, as they had been in 1920. The event was won by Vincent Richards of the United States, the nation's first victory in the event since 1904 and second overall (tied with South Africa for second-most all-time behind Great Britain's three wins). France and Italy each earned their first men's singles tennis medals, with Henri Cochet's silver and Uberto De Morpurgo's bronze, respectively. Background This was the seventh appearance of the men's singles tennis event. Hilary Stebbing (1915-1996) was an artist, illustrator and children's author particularly associated with Puffin Books, and active in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1960s. Biography She was a student at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the late 1930s, where she was a contemporary of Monica Walker and the stained-glass artist, conservator and author John ‘Jack’ Baker, whom she married in 1946. Her woodblock print 'Heaven, Hell and Purgatory' was included in the annual Exhibition of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1939. It was shown again in the Society's Centenary Exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in 2020 and illustrated in the catalogue. It is also reproduced in Simon Lawrence’s history of the Society, ''Spitsticks and Multiples'' (Fleece Press 2022). Joannes Henricus "Joop" Knottenbelt internationally known as Josef Knottenbelt (1910 – 1998) was a Dutch tennis player. He was a member of the Netherlands Davis Cup team with among others Henk Timmer. In 1927 he won the Dutch youth (under 18) championships. In 1931, Knottenbelt reached the second round of the men's singles at Wimbledon, losing to Eberhard Nourney of Germany, 8–10 6–2, 0–6 9–11. In the 1932 Wimbledon mixed doubles, he and Madzy Rollin Couquerque lost in the fourth round to Ellsworth Vines and Helen Wills-Moody. The men's doubles tennis competition was one of five tennis events at the 1924 Summer Olympics. There were 76 players from 24 nations, forming 38 pairs. Nations were limited to two pairs (four players) each. The event was won by Americans Francis Hunter and Vincent Richards after five-set matches in both the semifinals and final against French pairs. It was the nation's second victory in the event, second-most behind Great Britain's three wins. Jacques Brugnon and Henri Cochet were the silver medalists, falling to the Americans in the final.
