Gerald Hawranik
Gerald Hawranik is a lawyer and former politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Manitoba legislature from 2002 to 2011. Hawranik studied at the University of Manitoba, earning degrees in law, education and physical education. He was a long-time resident of northeastern Manitoba. He has been a practicing lawyer for over 30 years, and has also been the co-owner of a general insurance agency and an automobile dealership in the area. During the early 1990s, he and his wife were responsible for opening the first rural food bank in Canada in the region. Hawranik is also the founder of ''Beauserve Homes, Inc.'', a learning facility for mentally challenged adults. In 1993, he was named Queen's Counsel. Hawranik was first elected to the legislature in a 2002 by-election in the riding of Lac du Bonnet (following the resignation of Darren Praznik). The New Democratic Party of Manitoba (french: Nouveau Parti démocratique du Manitoba) is a social-democratic political party in Manitoba, Canada. It is the provincial wing of the federal New Democratic Party, and is a successor to the Manitoba Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. It is currently the opposition party in Manitoba. Formation and early years In the federal election of 1958, the national Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was reduced to only eight seats in the House of Commons of Canada. The CCF's leadership restructured the party during the next three years, and in 1961 it merged with the Canadian Labour Congress to create the New Democratic Party (NDP). The 2007 Manitoba general election was held on May 22, 2007 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. It was won by the New Democratic Party, which won 36 seats out of 57. The Progressive Conservative Party finished second with nineteen seats. The Liberal Party won two seats. The Legislature of Manitoba is the legislature of the province of Manitoba, Canada. Today, the legislature is made of two elements: the King of Canada in Right of Manitoba, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, and the unicameral assembly called the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba.
