Georgios Avgerinos (Greek: Γεώργιος Αυγερινός, 18th century – 19th century) was a Greek Merchant, trader and leader or the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Biography He was a general leader of the Avgerinos family in which it ruled the main political view of a free Greece for up to a hundred years. The Avgerinos family descended from Avgerata in the island of Kefalonia in which they moved to the village of Douka, Elia, Douka in Elis (regional unit), Elis. Later in 1770, after the destruction, the family relocated themselves to the city of Pyrgos, Elis, Pyrgos. Georgios Avgerinos appeared in 1778 as a secretary of the Turkish cattlers in Lalas, Greece, Lalas and in Gastouni. He won the land over the Turks and sold his cattle in Zakynthos. He defended several privileges for the area of Pyrgos and a small stadium that evolved with the main usage of the draining works of the fields of Gastouni. Elis (regional Unit)
Elis or Ilia ( el, Ηλεία, ''Ileia'') is a historic region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011 it was Elis Prefecture, covering the same territory. The modern regional unit is nearly coterminous with the ancient Elis of the classical period. Here lie the ancient ruins of cities of Elis, Epitalion and Olympia, known for the ancient Olympic Games which started in 776 BC. Geography The northernmost point of Elis is 38° 06'N, the westernmost is 22° 12′E, the southernmost is 37° 18′N, and the easternmost is 21° 54′E.
