Georgios Amerikanos
Georgios Amerikanos (alternate spelling: Giorgos) (Greek language, Greek: Γιώργος Αμερικάνος; 21 December 1942 – 7 October 2013) was a Greek professional basketball player and basketball coach. He was nicknamed Global, or Worldwide. In honour of his great contributions to the club as a player, his number 10 jersey was retired by AEK BC, AEK Athens. Club career Amerikanos started playing basketball with the youth clubs of XAN Nikaias (YMCA). He then moved to the Greek club AEK Athens BC, AEK Athens, where he would become one of the best players in the history of the club. With AEK, he won 6 Greek Basket League, Greek League championships (1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, and 1970). Nikaia, Attica
Nikaia ( el, Νίκαια, ''Níkaia''), known before 1940 as Kokkinia (, ''Kokkiniá''), is a suburb of Piraeus, in the southwestern part of the Athens Urban Area, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Rentis in the Piraeus (regional unit), regional unit of Piraeus, and it is the seat and a municipal unit of the municipality. The Balkan Basketball Championship, sometimes referred to as the Balkan Basketball Cup or the Balkan Basketball Games, is the defunct competition that was the men's basketball competition added in 1959 to the Balkan Games that started in 1929. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. Greek National Basketball Team
The Greece men's national basketball team ( el, Eθνική Oμάδα Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ελλάδος) represents Greece in international basketball. They are controlled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Greece. Greece is currently ranked ninth in the FIBA World Rankings. Greece appeared eight times at the FIBA World Cup, their best performance coming in 2006 as runners-up, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semi-final. Greece took part the in the EuroBasket 28 times, winning the tournament twice; while also coming away with one silver ( 1989) as well as two bronze medals (1949, 2009). European Professional Club Basketball System
Professional basketball clubs in Europe can compete in a number of different competitions, including national leagues, regional (multi-national) leagues, and continental competitions. It is therefore possible for clubs from some countries to take part in several levels of competition in the same season. Clubs usually qualify for European competitions through performance in their national or regional leagues, with the exception of wild cards.
