Georgetown Railroad
The Georgetown Railroad is a class III short-line railroad headquartered in Georgetown, Texas. History The original Georgetown Railroad Company was chartered on May 31, 1878, with a commitment to build a railroad the approximately 10 mile distance between Georgetown and Round Rock. The first board of directors consisted of Emzy Taylor, Moses E. Steele, Thomas B. Hughes, J. H. Rucker, Duncan G. Smith, and John J. Dimmitt, all of Williamson County, and David Love. The headquarters was in Georgetown. The proceeds of the first stock offering was about $50,000, and the end of 1878, the GRR had connected Georgetown to Round Rock. Soon, the railroad found itself in difficult financial straits and was sold in foreclosure on August 5, 1879. The International-Great Northern Railroad purchased the Georgetown and operations merged with that company in 1882. EMD GP20
An EMD GP20 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1959 and April 1962. Power was provided by an EMD 567D2 16-cylinder turbocharged engine which generated . EMD was initially hesitant to turbocharge their 567-series diesel engine, but was spurred on to do so following successful tests made by Union Pacific in the form of UP's experimental ''Omaha GP20'' units. 260 examples of EMD's production locomotive model (with the EMD turbocharger) were built for American railroads. The GP20 was the second EMD production locomotive to be built with an EMD turbocharged diesel engine, sixteen months after the six-axle ( C-C) model SD24. The Georgetown Rail Equipment Company (GREX) is a provider of railway maintenance equipment and related services based in Georgetown, Texas. The company was founded in 1993 and is often referred to using the abbreviation GREX, also used for its logotype. History The Snead family founded several businesses in Georgetown, Texas, including the limestone quarry Texas Crushed Stone and a railroad. Edwin Brazelton Snead founded the quarry in the 1940s, and then the railroad with his sons Ned and Bill to haul the limestone from Georgetown to Austin.
