Georgetown Fire House And Old City Hall
The Georgetown Fire House and Old City Hall is a limestone building located at the intersection of 9th Street and South Main Street in Georgetown, Texas, United States. Description and history The structure was designed by C.I. Belford and built by C.W. Schell in 1892. It originally housed the fire department, city council chambers and mayor's office, a jail, and the local water company. Since then, the Fire House and Old City Hall has housed chamber of commerce offices and been used by Second Baptist Church. According to the Williamson County Historical Commission, the structure is a rare example of hybrid fire station and city hall buildings constructed during the 19th century. Georgetown is a city in Texas and the county seat of Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 67,176 at the 2020 census. It is 30 miles (48 km) north of Austin. Founded in 1875 from four existing colleges, the oldest of which had been founded 35 years earlier, Southwestern University is the oldest university in Texas. It is in Georgetown about one-half mile from the historic square. Georgetown has a notable range of Victorian commercial and residential architecture. In 1976, a local historic ordinance was passed to recognize and protect the significance of the historic central business district. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state.
