Georges Nicholas Haddad
Georges Nicolas Haddad, SMSP (born 24 June 1957 in Beirut, Lebanon) is the current bishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Baniyas, Lebanon. Ecclesiastical career Haddad was ordained a priest on August 28, 1983 as a member of the Melkite religious community Missionary Society of St. Paul. On 20 April 2002, he was appointed as Titular Archbishop of Myra of Greek Melkites with simultaneous appointment as Apostolic Exarch of Argentina. His episcopal ordination was performed on 23 June 2002 by Gregory III Laham BS, Melkite Patriarch of Antioch, and his co-consecrators were André Haddad, BS (Archbishop of Zahle and Furzol) and Georges El-Murr, BC (Archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia). Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy Of Baniyas
Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Baniyas (in Latin: Archeparchy Caesariensis or Paneadensis) is a diocese of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church suffragan of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Tyre. In 2009 there were 2,500 baptized. It is currently governed by Archeparch Georges Nicholas Haddad, SMSP. The Archeparchy is named after the city of Baniyas. Territory and statistics The archeparchy includes the southeastern part of Lebanon. The archeparchial seat is the town of Marjayoun with its Saint Peter's Cathedral, built in 1892 and restored in 1968 after a fire. The archeparchy had 11 parishes at the end of 2012. Gregory III Laham
Gregory III Laham, B.S. ( ar, غريغوريوس الثالث لحام; la, Gregorius III Lahamus; born Lutfy Laham, December 15, 1933, in Darayya, Syria), Emeritus Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, of Alexandria and Jerusalem, is the former spiritual leader of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. He was elected on November 29, 2000, succeeding Patriarch Maximos V Hakim. He retired on May 6, 2017. He took the name Gregory in honor of Patriarch Gregory II Youssef, who was the last member of his religious order, the Basilian Salvatorian Order, to be elected Patriarch. Gregory III, who studied in Rome, Italy, and is multilingual, is also the author of several books on Eastern Catholic spirituality and theology. André Haddad, BS (20 September 1930 in Roum, Lebanon – 13 December 2017) was an Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Zahle and Forzol. Ecclesiastical career On June 13, 1954 Andre Haddad was ordained to the priesthood and appointed Chaplain of the Melkite Basilians of the Most Holy Redeemer. He was appointed and consecrated on 14 June 1983 as Archbishop of Zahle and Furzol succeeding Augustin Farah. Georges El-Murr, BC (11 October 1930 in Ka'a at Baalbek, Lebanon – 8 February 2017) was Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Petra and Philadelphia in Amman. Life Georges El-Murr was ordained a priest of the Order of St. John S. Ordo Basilianus Baptistae, Soaritarum Melkitarum (religious symbol: BC) on 27 July 1958. He was appointed vicar for the District of Irbid in 1968 and moved in 1991 to Newton (USA). His appointment as Archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia on August 26, 1992, made him successor to Archbishop Saba Youakim. Melkite Greek Catholic Bishops
The term Melkite (), also written Melchite, refers to various Eastern Christian churches of the Byzantine Rite and their members originating in the Middle East. The term comes from the common Central Semitic root ''m-l-k'', meaning "royal", and by extension "imperial" or loyal to the Byzantine Emperor. The term acquired religious connotations as denominational designation for those Christians who accepted imperial religious policies, based on Christological resolutions of the Council of Chalcedon (451). Originally, during the Early Middle Ages, Melkites used both Greek and Aramaic language in their religious life, and initially employed the Antiochian rite in their liturgy, but later (10th-11th century) accepted Constantinopolitan rite, and incorporated Arabic in parts of their liturgical practices.
