Georges Bridgland
George Bridgland (26 February 1915 - July 1997) was a French, triple British Classic-winning jockey, and St Leger and Arc de Triomphe winning trainer. He was born George Albert Richard Bridgland to British parents in France on 26 February 1915. His riding career lasted from 1928 to 1948. Pre-war, he was a leading jockey in his native France, becoming runner-up in the French Jockeys' Championship in 1936. Then, due to the Second World War, he relocated to England, where he won three Classics. The first two were wartime races - the 1941 St Leger on Sun Castle, the 1944 Oaks on Hycilla. The third was the 1947 Derby, the first to be held on a Saturday, which he won on unfancied outsider Pearl Diver, beating the odds-on favourite Tudor Minstrel and denying champion jockey Gordon Richards what would have been his first Derby win. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. Montaval
Montaval (foaled 1953) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Although trained in France throughout his career, his most notable achievements came in Britain: he was narrowly beaten in the 1956 Epsom Derby and won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the following year. In total he won five times in a career of at least seventeen races which lasted from 1955 until November 1957. He was retired to stand as a stallion in Ireland and was exported to Japan in 1961. Background Montaval was a bay horse with a narrow white blaze and three white socks bred in France by this owner, the American businessman Ralph B. Strassburger. Montaval's dam, the British-bred mare Ballynash was bought by Strassburger for £2000 in December 1949. Cambremer (horse)
Cambremer (foaled 18 April 1953) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes in 1956. After showing some promise in his early career he developed into a top-class performer when moved up to longer distances. He won the Grand Prix de Vichy in the summer of 1956 before winning the St Leger. In the following season he won the Prix du Cadran and finished second in the Ascot Gold Cup. He made no impact as a sire of winners. Background Cambremer was a dark chestnut horse with no white markings bred in France by his owner Ralph Strassburger. He was one of two classic winners sired by the 1945 St Leger winner Chamossaire, the other being the 1964 Epsom Derby winner Santa Claus. Sir Gordon Richards (5 May 1904 – 10 November 1986) was an English jockey. He was the British flat racing Champion Jockey 26 times and is often considered the world's greatest jockey ever. He remains the only flat jockey to have been knighted. Early life Gordon Richards was brought up in the Shropshire village of Donnington Wood (now part of Telford) where he was born at Ivy Row (now demolished),Article by Toby Neal, part of series on Midlands worthies. the third son of eight surviving children of coal miner Nathan and former dressmaker Elizabeth. The Champion Jockey of flat racing in Great Britain is the jockey who has ridden the most winning horses during a season. The list below shows the Champion Jockey and the number of winners for each year since 1840. The seasonal record of jockeys' winners was published for the first time in 1846. Tudor Minstrel
Tudor Minstrel (1944–1971) was a British-bred Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. In a career which lasted from the spring of 1946 until September 1947 he ran ten times and won eight races. He was unbeaten in four races in 1946, a year in which he was the highest-rated two-year-old in Britain, despite ending his season in July. The following year he won the 2,000 Guineas, St. James's Palace Stakes and Knights Royal Stakes over one mile but was beaten in his two attempts at longer distances, most notably when starting odds-on favourite for the 1947 Epsom Derby. Background Tudor Minstrel was a handsome, powerfully built brown horse bred by his owner John Athur Dewar.
