George Ziegler (general)
George Milton Ziegler (1832–1912) was a Union Army officer from Ohio during the American Civil War. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 47th Ohio Infantry Regiment on August 28, 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant on December 6, 1861 and to captain on December 28, 1862. On December 22, 1864 he was named colonel of the 52nd United States Colored Infantry Regiment. On March 24, 1866, President of the United States, President Andrew Johnson nominated Ziegler for appointment to the grade of Brevet (military), brevet Brigadier general (United States), brigadier general of volunteers, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on April 10, 1866. He is interred at Green Lawn Cemetery (Columbus, Ohio), Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. 47th Ohio Infantry
The 47th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment had 14 Medal of Honor recipients, the most of any Ohio regiment during the war. Service The 47th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio and mustered on August 13, 1861, for three years service under the command of Colonel Frederick Poschner. Green Lawn Cemetery (Columbus, Ohio)
Green Lawn Cemetery is a historic private rural cemetery located in Columbus, Ohio in the United States. Organized in 1848 and opened in 1849, the cemetery was the city's premier burying ground in the 1800s and beyond. An American Civil War memorial was erected there in 1891, and chapel constructed in 1902. With , it is Ohio's second-largest cemetery. History Franklinton Cemetery was the first cemetery established in what later became Columbus. It was built on land donated by Lucas Sullivant on River Street near Souder Avenue in 1799. Many of the early settlers of Franklinton and Columbus were buried there. The North Graveyard followed in 1812, and the East Graveyard in 1841. A Roman Catholic cemetery opened in 1848 (although it had been in use as early as 1846). In the United States Armed Forces, a brigadier general is a one-star general officer in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force. A brigadier general ranks above a colonel and below a major general. The pay grade of brigadier general is O-7. In many of the world's military establishments, a brevet ( or ) was a warrant giving a commissioned officer a higher rank title as a reward for gallantry or meritorious conduct but may not confer the authority, precedence, or pay of real rank. An officer so promoted was referred to as being brevetted (for example, "he was brevetted major general"). The promotion would be noted in the officer's title (for example, "Bvt. Maj. Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain" or "Bvt. Col. Arthur MacArthur").
