George Young, Lord Young
George Young, Lord Young, (2 July 1819 – 21 May 1907) was a Scottish Liberal MP in the British Parliament and a judge, with the judicial title of Lord Young. Life He was born in Dumfries and educated locally before being sent to the University of Edinburgh to study law. He became a member of the Faculty of Advocates in 1840 and was also called to the English bar. He held the judicial offices of Sheriff of Inverness in 1853–1860 and Haddington and Berwick in 1860–1862. He was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1862–1866 and 1868–1869. He was appointed Lord Advocate in 1869, the most senior legal position in Scotland, and technically a governmental post. This role is primarily one of law-making. He represented Wigtown Burghs in 1865–1874, until he lost an election. After an election petition, that election was declared void and the seat awarded to Young on 28 May 1874. Charles Kincaid Mackenzie
right Charles Kincaid Mackenzie, Lord Mackenzie (1857–1938) was a Scottish lawyer who served as a Senator of the College of Justice. He was also a cricketer. Life He was born on 8 March 1857. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy then at Repton School. He studied law at University College within Oxford University, there playing for the university cricket team in the first inter-university match against Cambridge, and graduating BA (Hons). He was the Scottish bar in 1881 and in 1895 was living at 47 Heriot Row. He was Sheriff of Dumfries and Galloway 1899/1900 and became Sheriff of Fife and Kinross in 1901. In 1905 he was a King's Counsel (KC). In December 1905 he was elected a Senator of the College of Justice replacing James Adam, Lord Adam. He stepped down from this position in 1922 due to ill health. He died in his Heriot Row home in Edinburgh on 1 April 1938. Sir John Hay Athole Macdonald, Lord Kingsburgh, KCB, PC, PRSSA, FRS, FRSE (27 December 1836 – 9 May 1919) was a Scottish Conservative Party politician and later a judge. Life Macdonald was born on 28 December 1836 at 29 Great King Street in Edinburgh's New Town, the son of Grace Hay and Matthew Norman MacDonald (later MacDonald-Hume) of Ninewells, an affluent Edinburgh lawyer. He was privately educated at Edinburgh Academy. He studied law at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Basle in Switzerland. He was called to the Scottish bar in 1859. On 30 July 1875 he was appointed by Queen Victoria to be Sheriff of the Shires of Ross, Cromarty, and Sutherland. He was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland from 1876 to 1880. John Millar, Lord Craighill (1817–1888) was a Scottish lawyer and judge. He served two brief terms as Solicitor General for Scotland and in 1874 was appointed a Senator of the College of Justice. Life Millar was born in 1817, the son of John Hepburn Millar, a Glasgow merchant. Millar studied at the University of Glasgow and in 1842 was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates. Edward Francis Maitland, Lord Barcaple (1803–1870) was a Scottish advocate and judge and Senator of the College of Justice. Life He was born at 36 George Square in Edinburgh on 16 April 1803, the son of Adam Maitland of Dundrennan. He was educated at the High School in Edinburgh then studied law at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MA. The brother of Thomas Maitland, Lord Dundrennan, he became an advocate in 1831, and served in government as Solicitor General for Scotland from 1855–1858 and from 1859–1862. Sir Mark John MacTaggart-Stewart, 1st Baronet (12 October 1834 – 26 September 1923), known as Mark John Stewart until 1880, was a Scottish Conservative Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom.
