George Winter (Australian Politician)
George Winter (1815 – 14 September 1879) was a pastoralist and politician in colonial Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Winter was born in Oakley Park, King's county, Ireland, the son of Samuel Pratt Winter and Frances Rosa, ''née'' Bamford. Victoria is a state in southeastern Australia. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Port Phillip District
The Port Phillip District was an administrative division of the Colony of New South Wales from 9 September 1836 until 1 July 1851, when it was separated from New South Wales and became the Colony of Victoria. In September 1836, NSW Colonial Secretary Alexander Macleay declared Captain William Lonsdale the "Police Magistrate" of "the location of Settlers on the vacant Crown Lands adjacent to the shores of Port Phillip." This position was someone "of which all persons concerned are hereby required to take notice." In May 1839, Governor George Gipps defined the "Port Phillip District" as "The whole of the Lands comprised in the District lying to the south of the main range, between the Rivers Ovens and Goulburn, and adjacent to Port Phillip." Electoral District Of Villiers And Heytesbury (Victorian Legislative Council)
The Electoral district of Villiers and Heytesbury was one of the original sixteen electoral districts of the old unicameral Victorian Legislative Council of 1851 to 1856. Victoria being a colony in Australia at the time. The district was located in western Victoria and included the counties of Villiers and Heytesbury, covering the area from Lake Corangamite along the coast westward past Port Fairy. William Rutledge
William Rutledge, also known as Billy Rutledge, (January 1806 – 1 June 1876) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, and later, of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Rutledge was the eldest son of James Rutledge, of Ballymagirl (near Bawnboy), County Cavan, Ireland, and Martha, ''née'' Forster, of Longford, and reached Sydney, New South Wales aboard the ''Harriet'' in December 1829. Rutledge took sheep overland to Port Phillip District in 1838. He purchased several lots at the early Melbourne land sales and commenced a partnership with Benjamin Baxter, financing him to build cottages in the Port Phillip area at £650 each. At Kilmore Rutledge established a tenant community on a special survey, and although he never took it up he became known as the town's founder and gave land for a Roman Catholic church. Claud Farie
Claud Farie, sometimes spelled Claude Farie (5 December 1816 – 22 August 1870) was sheriff and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Farie was born in Farme, near Glasgow, Scotland, the son of James Farie and his wife Jane, ''née'' Scott. Colonial Australia Farie arrived in the Port Phillip District in January 1840. He was made Sheriff of Victoria on 2 November 1852. In April 1854, Farie was elected to the unicameral Victorian Legislative Council for Electoral district of Villiers and Heytesbury (Victorian Legislative Council), Villiers and Heytesbury. He held this position until resigning in October 1855. Farie was inspector-general of penal establishments in 1869; captain commanding the Southern Rifles (formerly Prahran and South Yarra Rifle Corps) 1863–1869 and Pentridge Rifle Corps in 1869. William Forlonge
William Jack Forlonge (15 May 1813 – 15 September 1890) was a pastoralist and politician in colonial Victoria and New South Wales, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, the Victorian Legislative Assembly and the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Early life Forlonge was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of John and Eliza Forlonge. John Forlonge (died 1834) was a merchant in Glasgow and decided to send his two surviving sons to New South Wales, several of his children having earlier died from tuberculosis. William Forlonge, his brother Andrew and their mother went to Leipzig with his mother in 1826 where William worked in a wool sorting house for three years. John joined his family in 1828. Eliza chose 98 Saxon sheep from studs, then she and her sons drove them to Hamburg.
