George Wilton Ballard
George Wilton Ballard (November 24, 1877 - April 6, 1950) was an American tenor and pioneer recording artist who was prolific between 1912 and 1926. Biography George Wilton Ballard was born in Syracuse New York on November 24, 1877. His father's name was Alfred Ballard, his middle name "Wilton" was his mother's maiden name. His musical career began as a church soloist in Syracuse. He moved to New York City where he had a professional career as a concert singer, mostly in churches. He was also the primary soloist of Calvary Methodist-Episcopal Church in New York City. While in New York City he continued his vocal studies under Oscar Saenger. While in New York he had an active recording career for fifteen years. He returned to Syracuse circa 1935 and spent the rest of his life as a jewelry store salesman. Calvary Church is an Episcopal church located at 277 Park Avenue South on the corner of East 21st Street in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, on the border of the Flatiron District. Gennett (pronounced "jennett") was an American record company and label in Richmond, Indiana, United States, which flourished in the 1920s. Gennett produced some of the earliest recordings by Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, and Hoagy Carmichael. Its roster also included Jelly Roll Morton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, and Gene Autry. History Gennett Records was founded in Richmond, Indiana, by the Starr Piano Company. It released its first records in October 1917. The company was named for its managers: Harry, Fred and Clarence Gennett. The company had produced early recordings under the Starr Records label. Blue Amberol Records was the trademark name for cylinder records manufactured by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. in the US from 1912 to 1929. They replaced the 4-minute black wax Amberol cylinders introduced in 1908, which had replaced the 2-minute wax cylinders that had been the standard format since the late 1880s. Blue Amberols can play for as long as 4 minutes and 45 seconds and have a surface layer of the "indestructible" plastic celluloid, which Edison tinted a trademark blue color. The Edison Diamond Disc Record is a type of phonograph record marketed by Thomas A. Edison, Inc. on their Edison Record label from 1912 to 1929. They were named Diamond Discs because the matching Edison Disc Phonograph was fitted with a permanent conical diamond stylus for playing them. Diamond Discs were incompatible with lateral-groove disc record players, e.g. the Victor Victrola, the disposable steel needles of which would damage them while extracting hardly any sound.
