George William Anderson (Canadian Politician)
George William Anderson (May 20, 1836 – April 21, 1909) was an England, English-born farmer, baker and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Victoria (British Columbia electoral district), Victoria in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1886 to 1894. He was born in Wotton, Surrey, the son of John Anderson, and was educated at Dorking. At the age of 14, he left school to work with his father on the family farm. The following year, he apprenticed as a baker, working for three years in England before travelling to New York City in 1854. Two years later, Anderson moved to Dubuque, Iowa, opening his own business there. He married Mary O'Connell there in 1859. In 1864, he sold his business, investing in horses, which he sold at a profit in California. Anderson then entered the bakery business again in Grass Valley, California, Grass Valley. Victoria was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia, and was one of the first twelve ridings at the time of that province's joining Confederation in 1871 and stayed on the hustings until 1890. From 1894 to 1963 it did not appear on the electoral map. During that period the Victoria area was represented by North Victoria, South Victoria, Saanich, Esquimalt, Oak Bay and Victoria City. Wotton, Surrey
Wotton is a well-wooded parish with one main settlement, a small village mostly south of the A25 between Guildford in the west and Dorking in the east. The nearest village with a small number of shops is Westcott. Wotton lies in a narrow valley, collecting the headwaters of the Tilling Bourne which then has its first combined flow in the Vale of Holmesdale. The parish is long north to south, reaching to the North Downs escarpment (and the North Downs Way) in the north to the escarpment of the Greensand Ridge at Leith Hill in the south. Wotton Common forming the south of the parish is elevated woodland dotted with a few vernacular-style houses and has the county's only natural waterfall. Dorking
Dorking () is a market town in Surrey in South East England, about south of London. It is in Mole Valley District and the council headquarters are to the east of the centre. The High Street runs roughly east–west, parallel to the Pipp Brook and along the northern face of an outcrop of Lower Greensand. The town is surrounded on three sides by the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is close to Box Hill and Leith Hill. The earliest archaeological evidence of human activity is from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, and there are several Bronze Age bowl barrows in the local area. The town may have been the site of a staging post on Stane Street during Roman times, however the name 'Dorking' suggests an Anglo-Saxon origin for the modern settlement.
