George Washington Putnam
George Washington Putnam (March 24, 1826March 4, 1899) was an American farmer, livestock dealer, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the western half of Richland County during the 1872 and 1873 sessions. Biography Putnam was born on March 24, 1826, in Andover, Vermont. He later attended Black River Academy in Ludlow (village), Vermont. He relocated to Wisconsin in 1856. During the American Civil War, Putnam served with the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery Regiment of the Union Army. He died in Plymouth, Vermont, in 1899. Ludlow (village), Vermont
Ludlow is an incorporated village within the town of Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont, United States. It is sometimes called Ludlow Village, to distinguish it from the surrounding town of the same name. The population was 773 at the 2020 census. History Ludlow Woolen Mills is a prominent feature of the village and its history. The mill was first built for woolen manufacture in 1834 and operated until 1837, when the business failed in the economic panic of that year. After sitting vacant for a time, it was sold and had resumed operation by 1853. The mill complex, by then including a machine shop, sawmill, and boardinghouse, changed hands again in 1856 and 1864. The original building, which was five stories tall, burned in 1865 and was rebuilt as the three-story brick building that remains today. Black River Academy
The Black River Academy is a historic school building on High Street in the village of Ludlow, Vermont. Chartered in 1835, the school served as the town high school until 1938. The present building, a Richardsonian Romanesque structure built in 1888, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 for its architectural and historic educational significance. It presently houses the Black River Academy Museum, operated by the Black River Historical Society. Description The Black River Academy building stands on the south side of High Street, a short way west of the Ludlow village green. It is a three-story masonry structure, built out of load-bearing brick set on a granite foundation. It has a gabled roof with projection hip-roofed sections, and a four-story tower at one corner, topped by a truncated pyramidal roof.
