George Vere Hobart
George Vere Hobart (1867 – 1926) was a Canadian-American humorist who authored more than 50 musical comedy librettos and plays as well as novels and songs. At the time of his death, Hobart was "one of America's most popular humorists and playwrights". Hobart gained initial national fame for the "Dinkelspiel" letters, a weekly satirical column written in a German-American dialect. The Library of Congress includes several of his songs in the National Jukebox. Hobart also wrote under the pseudonym Hugh McHugh. Many of his works were adapted into films. Early life Hobart was born 16 January 1867 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. He immigrated to the Cumberland, Maryland to work as a telegraph operator for the United Press. Cape Breton Island (french: link=no, île du Cap-Breton, formerly '; gd, Ceap Breatainn or '; mic, Unamaꞌki) is an island on the Atlantic coast of North America and part of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. The island accounts for 18.7% of Nova Scotia's total area. Hal Clarendon (1876–1959) was an actor and director in the United States. He had a namesake stock theater company. He appeared in theatrical shows including as a lead. Alma, Where Do You Live? is a 1910 Broadway musical with lyrics and book by George V. Hobart and music by Jean Briquet. It opened at Weber's Music Hall on September 26, 1910, and closed on April 15, 1911, totaling 232 performances. The show was adapted from a German translation of a French play by Paul Nerve. Joe Weber produced and directed the show, with Hugo Frey acting as musical director. After the show's initial Broadway run, it toured some cities in 1912, including Lodi, California. The show was later adapted into a film of the same name. René Plaissetty
René Plaissetty (1889–1955) was an American film director. Son of Achille Plaissetty, chemist and businessman and Corinne Bonnecaze, professor of singing, René Plaissetty was born on March 7, 1889, in Chicago. In 1907 he came to live in France and later married Yvonne Lacroix, the daughter of Parisian couturier Jeanne Margaine-Lacroix and a French figure skating champion in 1908, with two daughters, Jacqueline in 1909 and Micheline in 1911. With the help of other administrators he founded his production company Filma. In January 1920, leaving his factory to his assistant, he left for London where he returned to the studios with Mary Massart, who became his muse. This film though a comedy is actually based on Ring's 1910 musical-comedy play of the same name. Being a silent film of course Ring's singing could not be heard by the film audiences but they would get the rare chance of seeing this Broadway star in a film as many could not afford to make the journey to New York to see her in person in the play. ''Wildfire'' is a 1915 silent drama film produced by the Shuberts and distributed by World Pictures. It is based on the 1908 Broadway play ''Wildfire'' by George V. Hobart and George Broadhurst. The play had starred the famous Lillian Russell, who, in a rare screen appearance, reprised her role here. It was remade in 1925 with Aileen Pringle. Surviving prints are missing the third reel and the ending. Prints and/or fragments were found in the Dawson Film Find in 1978. According to the American Film Institute catalog, this film was shot at the Peerless Studios. Plot John Keefe, a gambler, shoots and kills Robert Barrington in an argument over a card game. Keefe steals Barrington's papers and forges a bill of sale to himself for Barrington's stable of race horses back east. The stable includes the prize filly, Wildfire. ''The Blue Flame'' is a four- act play written by George V. Hobart and John Willard, who revised an earlier version by Leta Vance Nicholson. In 1920, producer Albert H. Woods staged the play on Broadway and on tour across the United States. Ruth Gordon, the main character, is a religious young woman who dies and is revived by her scientist fiancé as a soulless femme fatale. She seduces several men and involves them in crimes, including drug use and murder. In the final act, her death and resurrection are revealed to be a dream. The production starred Theda Bara, a popular silent film actress who was known for playing similar roles in movies. Critics panned the play, ridiculing the plot, dialogue, and Bara's acting. Theater historian Ward Morehouse called it "one of the worst plays ever written".
