George Underdown
George Underdown (12 May 1859 29 May 1895) was an English first-class cricketer. Underdown was born at Petersfield in May 1859. He played his club cricket in the town for Petersfield Cricket Club, serving as its assistant-secretary by 1880. As an amateur, he made his debut in first-class cricket for a United Eleven, captained by W. G. Grace, against the touring Australians at Chichester in 1882. Underdown began playing first-class cricket for Hampshire in 1883, representing the county in nine first-class matches prior to them losing first-class status at the end of the 1885 season. Across ten first-class matches, Underdown scored 231 runs at an average of 12.83, with one half century score of 63. Petersfield
Petersfield is a market town and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is north of Portsmouth. The town has its own railway station on the Portsmouth Direct line, the mainline rail link connecting Portsmouth and London. Situated below the northern slopes of the South Downs, Petersfield lies wholly within the South Downs National Park. The town is on the crossroads of well-used north–south (formerly the A3 road which now bypasses the town) and east–west routes (today the A272 road) and it grew as a coach stop on the Portsmouth to London route. Charles Hulse (cricketer)
Charles Westrow Hulse (25 November 1860 – 4 June 1901) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of Sir Edward Hulse, 5th Baronet of the Hulse baronets, he was born at the family seat at Breamore House in Breamore, Hampshire. He was educated at Radley College, before going up to Charsley's Hall, Oxford. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Artillery Militia in February 1880, serving with the militia at Fort Rowner. He was promoted to captain in April 1885, and in the same year he made a single appearance in first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against Hampshire at Southampton. Batting once in the match, he was dismissed in the MCC first innings for 22 runs by George Underdown. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. The County Ground in Southampton, England was a cricket and football ground. It was the home of Hampshire County Cricket Club from the 1885 English cricket season until the 2000 English cricket season. The ground also served as the home ground for Southampton Football Club from 1896 to 1898. Background Early Hampshire cricket teams had played first-class cricket in Southampton since 1842 at the Antelope Ground, under the supervision of Daniel Day. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. When the ICC was established in 1909, it was administered by the secretary of the MCC, and the president of MCC automatically assumed the chairmanship of ICC until 1989.
