George Turnbull (theologian)
George Turnbull (11 July 1698 – 31 Jan 1748) was a Scottish philosopher, theologian, teacher, writer on education and an early but little-known figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. He taught at Marischal College, Aberdeen, worked as a tutor and became an Anglican clergyman. Aside from his published writings on moral philosophy, he is also known for the influence he exerted on Thomas Reid and as the first member of the Scottish Enlightenment to publish a formal treatise on the theory and practice of education. Life George Turnbull was born on 11 July 1698 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He was the son of George Turnbull, a minister, and his wife Elizabeth, and the third of their nine children. Turnbull began his studies at the University of Edinburgh in 1711 and started studying for a degree in divinity in 1717, graduating MA in 1721. George Turnbull (soldier)
George Turnbull (1728 - 16 February 1809) was a Scottish American soldier and settler in New York City. He served as a soldier for about 60 years, initially for about 10 years in Colonel Majoribanks' Regiment of Scots, but then in North America. Early life George Turnbull was born in 1728 at Blackadder Mains in the county of Berwickshire in Scotland close to the Scottish/English border. In 1728 his father Hector Turnbull and Hector's son William had taken a lease from Sir John Home for Blackadder Mains: rent of 1200 marks Scottish money, carriage of 36 loads of coals or 5 Scots shillings each load, 18 capons or 8 shillings each capon, and 18 hens or 6 shillings each hen. Military career Turnbull was commissioned as a lieutenant in the British army in February 1756 and rose to captain of the 60th Regiment of Foot in November 1765. George Stanley Turnbull (December 5, 1882 – February 9, 1977) was an English-American scholar and educator. He began a career of newspaper work in 1894 and helped found the University of Oregon School of Journalism in 1917,''Oregonian'', February 12, 1977. later serving as acting dean and, from 1944 to 1948, as dean. He founded and edited ''Oregon Exchanges'', a newspaper for Oregon's "newspaper folk," which was at least initially produced by students at the School of Journalism. Sir George Henry Turnbull, CEng, FIMechE (17 October 1926 – 22 December 1992) was a UK automobile executive best remembered in the UK for his period as managing director of the Austin-Morris Division of British Leyland. Early life The son of a works manager at the Coventry-based Standard Motor Company, George Turnbull left his grammar school at the age of just 14 to take up a six-year automobile engineering design apprenticeship with Standard. It was the company that sponsored his engineering course at Birmingham University from which he obtained his first degree. He married in 1950 and fathered three children. George Edward Turnbull (25 May 1911 – 1996) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward or inside left in the Football League for Rochdale and Darlington. He had trials with Newcastle United and Guildford City, and played non-league football for clubs including Sunderland Forge, Bank Head Albion, Shiney Row Swifts, Easington Colliery Welfare and Sunderland Electrical Undertaking. Life and career Turnbull was born in Sunderland, which was then in County Durham. After a trial with Newcastle United early in the 1930–31 season, he signed for Rochdale.
