George Thorpe (cricketer, Born 1781)
George Thorpe (c. 1781 – 11 May 1847) was an English cricketer who was born in Nottingham and played for Nottingham Cricket Club. The first mention of Thorpe is in July 1826 when he played for Nottingham against a combined Sheffield and Leicester team on the Darnall Old Ground in Sheffield. Thorpe was number 11 in the batting order and scored 12 and 4 in his two innings An innings is one of the divisions of a cricket match during which one team takes its turn to bat. George Thorpe (20 February 1834 – 2 March 1899) was an English first-class cricketer, active 1862–64, who played for Sheffield Cricket Club (''aka'' Yorkshire) in 1862 and then for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He was born and died in Sheffield. George Thorp (Royal Navy Officer)
George Thorp (9 September 1777 – 25 July 1797) was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the French Revolutionary Wars. His short, but distinguished, career culminated in service as first lieutenant of the frigate and his death, aged 19, at the side of his commanding officer, Captain Richard Bowen, in the assault on Santa Cruz, Tenerife. Family and early life George Thorp was born on 9 September 1777, the fourth son of Dr Robert Thorp MA, DD, Rector of Ryton from 1781 to 1795, Archdeacon of Northumberland from 1792 to 1806, a distinguished mathematician (senior wrangler at Cambridge in 1758) and Latin scholar. His younger brother Charles Thorp also became rector of Ryton and later Archdeacon of Durham and a founder of Durham University.
