George William Thompson
George William Thompson (born 1956) is an American international trade attorney, an adjunct professor at George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government and a published author on international trade. He currently has his own firm, Thompson and Associates, in Washington, DC. Education and career Thompson attended the State University of New York (Oneonta) and graduated in 1978. He then attended the Cornell Law School and received the degree of Juris Doctor in 1981. In 1987, Thompson became an Attorney Advisor in the General Counsel's Office of the U.S. International Trade Commission and litigated numerous cases on the commission's behalf during his six-year tenure. He was involved in several important cases of the day including litigation involving a dispute with Canada over softwood lumber imports and with Norway over the dumping of salmon in U.S. markets and the investigations concerning Flat-Rolled Carbon Steel Products from numerous countries. George Peter Thompson
George Peter Thompson (1819–1889) was a Liberian-born educator, clergyman and pioneer missionary of the Basel Evangelical Missionary Society of Switzerland. He was also the first African to be educated in Europe by the mission and subsequently, the first African to be consecrated and ordained a Basel missionary. Thompson was part of the Basel Mission team led by Danish missionary, Andreas Riis that recruited 24 West Indian missionaries from Jamaica and Antigua in 1843, to aid the work of the society. Together with the Jamaican educator-missionaries, Alexander Worthy Clerk and Catherine Mulgrave, George Thompson was a co-founder and the first principal of the all boys’ middle boarding school, the Salem School, Osu, established in November 1843. Grimethorpe Colliery Band
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, based in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. Along with the Black Dyke Mills Band, the band became the first to perform at the Proms. Grimethorpe Band achieved worldwide fame after appearing in the film ''Brassed Off''. History The year after the band's formation saw it enter its first competition at Belle Vue in Manchester.. Its first radio broadcast was in 1932 and from 1941 to 1951 it was on UK national radio every month. George Thompson VC (23 October 1920 – 23 January 1945) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Biography Thompson was born in Trinity Gask, Perthshire and educated at Portmoak Primary School and Kinross High School. After being apprenticed to a grocer in Kinross he joined the Local Defence Volunteers when the Second World War began. In January 1941 he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as a ground crew wireless operator and serving in Iraq. He then volunteered for aircrew and was posted to RAF Bomber Command. George Thompson was the author of an 1827 single-volume (a two-volume edition followed shortly later in 1827) travelogue describing ''Travels and Adventures in Southern Africa'' in the years 1823–24. ''Travels and Adventures in Southern Africa'' was published in London by Henry Colburn. Thompson had arrived at the Cape Colony in about 1818 and became a successful merchant in Cape Town. He travelled widely in southern Africa for purposes, principally, of expanding his company’s business amongst the 1820 settlers of the Eastern Cape and elsewhere. He undertook an expedition to Kuruman and to the Augrabies Falls on the Orange River. George Thompson (engineer)
George Thompson (1839-1876) was an English engineer and military officer who was in charge of the Paraguayan military engineering during the Paraguayan War. He later wrote a history of this conflict that became one of the main sources on the subject. Early life Thompson was born in Greenwich on 26 March 1839. In 1849 he was sent to a school near Stuttgart, which he left in 1852, continuing his studies near London until 1854. From 1855 to 1857 he served an apprenticeship at the government works in Malta, and was put on the engineering staff of the gasworks in that island. He returned to England in 1857 and soon afterwards was engaged for one year as a draughtsman at a locomotive works. George W. Thompson (April 3, 1888 – August 21, 1912) was a self-taught aviator, and is one of the first Coloradan flyers. He was born near Sharon Springs, Kansas. Thompson built a Mathewson biplane, a Curtiss design, and soloed it on January 4, 1911. Biography His early career was working for the Mathewson Auto Company, Denver, Colorado. The company name later became the Mathewson Aeroplane Company. Thompson made several flights on his first flying day, and in the first year, about 100 flights during 1911. He was known to travel with his aircraft throughout Colorado and also in Wyoming, especially at county fairs with aerial shows. Thompson made the first flight ever in Wyoming using a Mathewson plane for the Independence Day celebration in Gillette, Wyoming in 1911.
