Sir George Thomas, 1st Baronet
Sir George Thomas, 1st Baronet (died 1774) was an English colonial government official, who served as Governor of the Leeward Islands. Thomas served as Deputy Governor of the Province of Pennsylvania between 1738 and 1747. In 1753 he became Governor of the British Leeward Islands, serving in the position until 1766. George Leo Thomas (born May 19, 1950) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church who has served as Archbishop of Las Vegas since 2023. He has been the ordinary of the diocese since 2018, when it was still a suffragan see. He previously served as Bishop of Helena from 2004 to 2018 and as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle from 1999 to 2004. George Holt Thomas (31 March 1869 – 1 January 1929) aviation industry pioneer and newspaper proprietor. Holt Thomas founded, in 1911, the business which became Aircraft Manufacturing Company Limited or Airco. George Thomas was an African-American who found success in the Russian Empire during the reign of Nicholas II. Thomas moved to St. Petersburg in 1890 to become a valet. The tsars had long hired black servants, and Afro-Russians could become extremely successful (see, for example Abram Petrovich Gannibal or Ira Aldridge). Thomas became an extremely rich and successful nightclub owner, theatrical producer, and more; he owned and ran the Aquarium, which boasted a theater, an amphitheater, back rooms, and so on. George Housman Thomas ( London December 17, 1824 – Boulogne-sur-Mer July 21, 1868), was a British wood-engraver, illustrator and painter. Life He was born in London in 1824 and after an apprenticeship there to a wood engraver, George Bonner, he began work in Paris, first as an engraver, then as a draughtsman on wood. In 1846 he went to the United States to illustrate a New York City paper, and remained there about two years. During this time he obtained a commission from the government of the United States to design banknotes. His health compelled him to return to Europe, and he went to Italy. He was present at the siege of Rome by the French in 1849, and sent sketches of the siege to the '' Illustrated London News''. After spending two years in Italy he returned to England. George Henry Thomas (July 31, 1816March 28, 1870) was an American general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and one of the principal commanders in the Western Theater. Thomas served in the Mexican–American War and later chose to remain with the U.S. Army for the Civil War as a Southern Unionist, despite his heritage as a Virginian (whose home state would join the Confederate States of America). He won one of the first Union victories in the war, at Mill Springs in Kentucky, and served in important subordinate commands at Perryville and Stones River. His stout defense at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 saved the Union Army from being completely routed, earning him his most famous nickname, "the Rock of Chickamauga." George Thomas (26 February 1781 – 1850) was a Master in the Royal Navy who was one of the early surveyors of the coasts of Great Britain Early life and education Thomas was born in Southwark, son of William Thomas. At the age of eight, an orphan, he was admitted to Christ's Hospital, the first Bluecoat school. The last part of his education was in the Royal Mathematical School, where he learned the theory and practice of navigation. The mathematics master was William Wales who had revised Robertson's ''Elements of Navigation'', the standard work used at the Royal Naval Academy as well as the Royal Mathematical School. George Thomas, nicknamed Jaharai Jung and Jahazi Sahib, (22 August 1802) was an Irish mercenary and later a Raja who was active in 18th-century India. From 1798 to 1801, he ruled a small kingdom in India, which he carved out of Hisar and Rohtak districts of Haryana. Early life Thomas was born in Roscrea, Tipperary, Ireland, where his father was a poor Catholic tenant farmer near Roscrea who died when George was a child. Originally forced to press-gang at Youghal, where he worked as a labourer on the docks, Thomas deserted from the British Navy at the age of 25 in Madras in 1782.
