George Stone (outfielder)
George Robert Stone, nicknamed Silent George, (September 3, 1876 – January 3, 1945) was a left fielder in Major League Baseball who played for the Boston Red Sox (1903) and St. Louis Browns (1905–10). Stone batted and threw left-handed. He was the 1906 American League batting champion. Early life Stone was born in Lost Nation, Iowa, to George and Hannah Stone and was Jewish. Prior to playing baseball, he had a career in banking in Nebraska. A 1906 article on him noted that his taste ran to reading, and his hobby was violin playing. Baseball career He left his career in banking in 1901 at the age of 24 to join the Omaha Omahogs of the Western League. In 1902 he played for the Omahogs and the Peoria Distillers and led the league with 198 hits, and the next year he again played for the Omahogs. George Stone (basketball)
George E. Stone (February 9, 1946 – December 30, 1993) was an American professional basketball player who spent several seasons in the American Basketball Association (ABA). He was drafted in the ninth round of the 1968 NBA draft (115th pick overall) by the Los Angeles Lakers, but never played for them or any other NBA team. A 6'7" forward from Marshall University, Stone played four seasons (1968–1972) in the ABA as a member of the Los Angeles / Utah Stars and Carolina Cougars. Stone played a key role in the Stars making the 1970 ABA Finals, leading the team in scoring during the playoffs at 23.6 points per game. George Heard Stone (born July 9, 1946) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He is likely best remembered for his season with the New York Mets, when he went 12–3 with a 2.80 ERA -- leading the National League in winning percentage -- to help the Mets to the 1973 World Series. Atlanta Braves Stone played college baseball and basketball for Louisiana Tech, and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 1966 Major League Baseball draft. After two seasons in the Braves' farm system, in which he went 16–9 with a 2.51 earned run average, he reached the majors as a September call-up in . George Stone (1708 – 19 December 1764) was the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh (Primate of All Ireland) from 1747 to his death. Advancement Born in London, the son of Andrew Stone, a London goldsmith. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. Having taken holy orders, his advancement in the Church was very rapid, mainly through the influence of his older brother Andrew Stone. Andrew's connections with George II made him able to promote the preferment of his brother George, who went to Ireland as chaplain to Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset when that nobleman became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1731. In 1733 Stone was made Dean of Ferns, and in the following year he exchanged this deanery for that of Derry. George Cameron Stone (August 6, 1859 – November 18, 1935) was a well-known American arms collector and author as well as an American mining engineer and metallurgist. He authored a glossary of the antique weapons of the world that remains one of the most comprehensive works ever written on the subject. Biography George Cameron Stone was originally from Geneva, New York. He graduated in 1879 with a Bachelor of Philosophy from the Columbia School of Mines. In 1880, Stone became a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (AIME). By 1882, Stone was employed as a mining engineer at the New Jersey Zinc and Iron Company. He was later promoted to chief engineer and chief metallurgist. George Lawrence Stone (1886–1967) was an American drummer and author. He wrote the books ''Stick Control for the Snare Drummer'' (1935) and ''Accents and Rebounds for the Snare Drummer'' (1961). Among his students were Joe Morello, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, and Vic Firth. Biography George Lawrence Stone was born in 1886. He was the son of drum teacher and manufacturer George Burt Stone. George Stone (1907–2001) was a British socialist journalist. During World War II, he worked for the Aeronautical Inspection Department, and he subsequently moved to Glasgow.
