George Stafford (footballer)
George Henry Esmond Stafford (21 October 1930 – 30 July 2010), was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and with Brighton in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Doncaster () is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 16 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Manningham local government area. Doncaster recorded a population of 25,020 at the 2021 census. The suburb, which is situated on 8.9 km2 of land, around the top of the 120 m high Doncaster Hill. Northcote Football Club
Northcote Football Club (/ˈnoːθ.kət/), nicknamed The Dragons, was an Australian rules football club which played in the VFA from 1908 until 1987. The club's colours for most of its time in the VFA were green and yellow and it was based in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Brighton Football Club
Brighton Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The club was based in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, and was nicknamed the Penguins. After suffering financial hardship throughout the 1950s, Brighton moved to Caulfield and became the Caulfield Bears in the early to mid-1960s. History An advertisement in '' The Argus'' on 8 June 1859 announced a meeting to be held on the 9th of that month, at the Devonshire Hotel, to form the Brighton Football Club. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). Fred Stafford
Frederick Raymond Stafford (3 August 1926 – 10 July 2009), the older brother of George Stafford is a former Australian rules footballer; a talented schoolboy footballer, who played for Northcote in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1945 and 1946, for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1947 to 1952, and for Sorrento Football Club in the Mornington Peninsula Football League for two seasons including another premiership in 1953. In his first season with Carlton, in the last few seconds of the 1947 VFL Grand Final against Essendon, the ever-alert and well-trained Stafford, normally a right foot kick, received the ball from a boundary throw-in, and under the most severe time pressure, kicked a goal with his left foot (as the image at right displays), giving Carlton a one-point victory. Bruce Comben
Bruce Comben (25 October 1930 – 15 December 2002) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Comben made his debut for the Carlton Football Club in the Round 1 of the 1950 season. He retired from the game at the end of the 1961 season. During his time at the club, he was Captain from 1958 to 1960, and won Best and Fairest in both 1957 and 1958. He was inducted into the Carlton Hall of Fame in 1989. Bruce died in 2002. He owned supermarkets in the Laverton and Werribee area, when they were named SSW. However, the Werribee branch closed and the Laverton store became Comben's IGA. Recently, the Laverton store has been sold and will no longer be called Comben's IGA.
