George Snook
George Sutton Snook (September 1, 1842 – July 31, 1894) was the sixth and twelfth President of the Chico Board of Trustees, the governing body of Chico, California from 1885 to 1886 and from 1892 to 1894. Early life and family Snook was born in Aurora, Indiana, on September 1, 1842, the son of Isaac Snook, a native of Pennsylvania and Elizabeth Sopris Snook. He was educated in Indiana in the trade of coopersmithing. He worked in this trade for three years before the American Civil War erupted. Civil War military service Snook was eighteen at the outbreak of the American Civil War, and in May 1861, he enlisted in Company C of the 12th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He served for ten months, and reenlisted in Company H of the 10th Regiment Indiana Cavalry under General Wilson. He participated in all the battles engaged by the Western army. Charles Ball (California Politician)
Charles Ball (April 4, 1819 – March 4, 1903) was the third and fifth President of the Chico Board of Trustees, the governing body of the city of Chico, California from 1876 to 1879, and from 1882 to 1885. He was a jeweler and watchmaker. He was the son of Jacob Green Ball from New Jersey and Lucretia Hoyt, from Norwalk, Connecticut. His mother Lucretia was the third great-granddaughter of Walter Hoyt, one of the founding settlers of Norwalk. He left from Poughkeepsie, New York to go west while his wife was still pregnant, and his son, Alanson was only two years old in 1848. He departed from New York City on a ship that sailed to Nicaragua, where he crossed over land to the Pacific shore. From there, he sailed to Yerba Buena (the early name of San Francisco) arriving in 1849. He made a return trip in 1850, and he is listed in the 1850 census living in Poughkeepsie on August 20. A livery is an identifying design, such as a uniform, ornament, symbol or insignia that designates ownership or affiliation, often found on an individual or vehicle. The Improved Order of Red Men is a fraternal organization established in North America in 1834. Their rituals and regalia are modeled after those assumed by men of the era to be used by Native Americans. Despite the name, the order was formed solely by, and for, white men. The organization claimed a membership of about half a million in 1935, but has declined to a little more than 15,000. The Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) was a fraternal organization in the United States and Canada, providing mutual social and financial support after the American Civil War. It was the first of the "fraternal benefit societies", organizations that would offer insurance as well as sickness, accident, death and burial policies. History The order began when John Jordan Upchurch, a mechanic on the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad living in Meadville, Pennsylvania, became dissatisfied with a group he had joined, the League of Friendship, Mechanical Order of the Sun.
