Sir George Savile, 1st Baronet
Sir George Savile, 1st Baronet of Thornhill (1551 – 12 November 1622), was an English politician and the lineal ancestor of the Marquesses of Halifax. He was born in 1551, the eldest son of Henry Savile and Joan Vernon. The Saviles were an old gentry family of Yorkshire, where many of them served as MPs or sheriffs. George Savile himself was elected to serve as Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge in 1586 and for Yorkshire in 1593. He succeeded to the estate of Thornhill after the death of his cousin, Edward Savile, in February 1602/3. He was created a Baronet in 1611 by James I of England and was High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1613–1614. He married twice, with children by both wives. His first wife, Mary Talbot, was the daughter of the Earl of Shrewsbury, and brought the estate of Rufford Abbey into the Savile family. Sir George Savile, 7th Baronet
Sir George Savile, 7th Baronet, (10 February 1678 – 16 September 1743), of Thornhill, of Rufford Nottinghamshire, was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1728 to 1734. Savile was the son of Rev. John Savile, rector of Thornhill, Yorkshire, and his second wife Barbara Jenison, daughter of Thomas Jenison of Newcastle. He was admitted at Middle Temple in 1691 and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1696. He succeeded a first cousin of his father, Sir John Savile, 6th Baronet, in 1704, inheriting Rufford Abbey. He had two sisters: Ann and Gertrude. Savile was appointed High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for the year 1706 to 1707. He was returned as Member of Parliament (MP) for Yorkshire at a by-election in 1728 and sat until the 1734 general election. Savile was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in November 1721. Sir George Savile, 8th Baronet of Thornhill FRS (18 July 1726 – 10 January 1784) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1759 to 1783. Background Savile was born in Savile House, London, the only son of Sir George Savile, 7th Baronet and Lady Savile (born Mary Pratt, later married to Charles Morton), of Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire and inherited his baronetcy on the death of his father in 1743. Savile was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge. Political career Savile was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Yorkshire at a by-election on 3 January 1759. In general he advocated views of a very liberal character, including measures of relief to Roman Catholics and to Protestant dissenters, and he defended the action of the American colonists. George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax, (11 November 1633 – 5 April 1695), was an English statesman, writer, and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1660, and in the House of Lords after he was raised to the peerage in 1668. Background and early life, 1633–1667 Savile was born in Thornhill, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the eldest son of Sir William Savile, 3rd Baronet, and his wife Anne Coventry, eldest daughter of Lord Keeper Thomas Coventry, 1st Baron Coventry. His father distinguished himself in the civil war in the royalist cause and died in 1644. Savile was also the nephew of Sir William Coventry, who is said to have influenced his political opinions, and of Lord Shaftesbury, afterwards his most bitter opponent, and great-nephew of the Earl of Strafford.
