George Reade (colonial Governor)
George Reade (October 25, 1608 – November 21, 1671) was a prominent landowner, military officer, judge, and politician who served as a member of the House of Burgesses and as List of colonial governors of Virginia, Acting Governor of Colony of Virginia, Virginia Colony. He is the great-great-grandfather of the first President of the United States, George Washington. Early life and family Reade was born on October 25, 1608 in Linkenholt, Hampshire, England, the son of Sir Robert Reade and Mildred Windebank Reade. He descended from Magna Charta Sureties. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Reade and Alice Cooke, and his maternal grandparents were Frances Dymoke and Sir Thomas Windebank. His uncle was Sir Francis Windebank, Secretary of State to Charles I of England, King Charles I. George Read (September 18, 1733 – September 21, 1798) was an American politician from New Castle in New Castle County, Delaware. He was a Continental Congressman from Delaware, a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention of 1787, president of Delaware, and a member of the Federalist Party, who served as U.S. Senator from Delaware and chief justice of Delaware. George Read III
George Read III (June 4, 1787 – November 1, 1836) was an American lawyer who served as the second U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware taking over for his father. Family George Read Jr. was born in the Read mansion on June 4, 1787 in New Castle, Delaware, United States. His paternal grandfather was George Read, a lawyer and politician who would go on to sign both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Read's great uncles, Thomas was an officer in the Continental Navy during the Revolution and James Read, was an officer in the Continental Army, and was later active in managing the navy under the Articles of Confederation. George Read, within the politics of Canada, is the former leader of the Alberta Greens and formerly a key organizer for the federal Green Party of Canada (GPC) in Alberta. Green Party organizing Read led the provincial and federal Green Parties in Alberta during a period (what period) of growth in support for the parties.
