George R. Carey
George R. Carey (1851–1906) was an American inventor. He was among the first to propose the telectroscope using the photoelectric properties of selenium as a means for transmitting images—a precursor to modern television. George R. Carey was a professional Surveying, surveyor employed by the City of Boston. In 1873, Willoughby Smith had discovered that the amount of electric current that selenium conducted photoconductivitydepended on the amount of light striking it. Carey learned of this discovery and used it to devise a crude system for transmitting images as an early attempt at television. In the May 17, 1878, issue of ''Scientific American'', the editors alluded to their earlier article about the 'telectroscope invented by Constantin Senlecq, M. Senlecq of Ardres.' : The telectroscope (also referred to as 'electroscope') was the first conceptual model of a television or videophone system. The term was used in the 19th century to describe science-based systems of distant seeing. The name and its concept came into being not long after the telephone was patented in 1876, and its original concept evolved from that of remote facsimile reproductions onto paper, into the live viewing of remote images. Figuier's imaginary telectroscope The term "telectroscope" was used by the French writer and publisher Louis Figuier in 1878 to popularize an invention wrongly interpreted as real and incorrectly ascribed to Alexander Graham Bell. Selenium is a chemical element with the symbol Se and atomic number 34. Willoughby Smith
Willoughby Smith (6 April 1828, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk – 17 July 1891, in Eastbourne, Sussex) was an English electrical engineer who discovered the photoconductivity of the element selenium. This discovery led to the invention of photoelectric cells, including those used in the earliest television systems. Career In 1848, he began working for the Gutta Percha Company, London where he developed iron and copper wires insulated with gutta-percha to be used for telegraph wires. In 1850, Smith superintended the manufacture and laying of 30 miles of underwater telegraph wire from Dover to Calais.
