George Putnam (newsman)
George Putnam (July 14, 1914 – September 12, 2008) was an American television news reporter and talk show host based in Los Angeles. He was known for his catchy phrase "and that’s the up-to-the-minute news, up to the minute, that’s all the news" at the end of his broadcast. He concluded the 5:00 PM news with a teaser, inviting viewers back to get the full story at the station's late evening news program, smiling his signature close, "back at 10, see you then!" Biography Putnam was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota. His radio career began on his 20th birthday in 1934 at WDGY in Minneapolis, then continued in Washington, DC at WJSV and later, in New York City. While working in New York, influential newspaper columnist Walter Winchell declared that "George Putnam's voice is the greatest in radio." Perversion For Profit
''Perversion for Profit'' is a 1963 Eastmancolor propaganda film financed by Charles Keating through Citizens for Decent Literature and narrated by news reporter George Putnam. The film argues that sexually explicit materials corrupt young viewers and readers, leading to acts of violence and "perverted" attitudes regarding sex—including inclination toward homosexuality. Although ''Perversion for Profit'' was serious in its suggestion that pornography could erode the integrity of American culture, Peter L. Stein of the ''San Francisco Chronicle'' wrote in a 2003 review that it was "shrill and sometimes comical". Today, ''Perversion for Profit'' is in the public domain, and it has become popular on the Prelinger Archives website and on YouTube. As Peter L. ''Broadway to Hollywood'' is an American television program broadcast on the now-defunct DuMont Television Network. While the daytime version was mainly a talk show with news, celebrity gossip, and home-viewer quizzes, the quiz portion became a full-fledged nighttime version within two weeks of the program's debut. Broadcast history The daytime show began on July 4, 1949, and was hosted by Don Russell. Two weeks later on July 20, a nighttime version hosted by George Putnam debuted. Charles Keating
Charles Humphrey Keating Jr. (December 4, 1923 – March 31, 2014) was an American sportsman, lawyer, real estate developer, banker, financier, conservative activist, and convicted felon best known for his role in the savings and loan scandal of the late 1980s. Keating was a champion swimmer for the University of Cincinnati in the 1940s. From the late 1950s through the 1970s, he was a noted anti-pornography activist, founding the organization Citizens for Decent Literature and serving as a member on the 1969 President's Commission on Obscenity and Pornography. In the 1980s, Keating ran American Continental Corporation and the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, and took advantage of loosened restrictions on banking investments. His enterprises began to suffer financial problems and were investigated by federal regulators.
