George Phillips (USMC)
Private George Phillips (July 14, 1926 – March 14, 1945) was a United States Marine who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for sacrificing his own life to save the lives of fellow Marines on Iwo Jima by throwing himself over an activated hand grenade. Biography George Phillips was born in Bates County, Missouri on July 14, 1926, and worked on the railroad before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 on April 25, 1944. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, the night of March 14, 1945, Private Phillips was standing guard as the other Marines in his unit were resting. A Japanese soldier tossed a hand grenade toward the group. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Phillips sacrificed his life by smothering the blast of the grenade with his own body to save the lives of his fellow Marines. George Frederick Phillips
George Frederick Phillips, (March 8, 1862 – June 4, 1904) was a U.S. Navy Machinist First Class who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Spanish–American War in 1899. Background Phillips was born to Andrew and Elizabeth Ross Phillips, both natives of Ireland. He began his professional life as a mechanic for the Intercolonial Railway in Moncton. Phillips later worked on liners for the Mallory Steamship Company between New York and Texas. US Military Service in the Spanish American War Phillips went to Galveston, Texas, where he joined the United States Navy in March 1898. George Phillips (Australian Politician)
George Phillips (1843 – 2 June 1921) was a surveyor, and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly in Australia. Early days Phillips was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, on October 12, 1843 to parents George Phillips, and his wife Emily Irwin (née Onge). After arriving in New South Wales on the Merlin in September 1852 he was educated at Dr William Wools Private School in Parramatta. George settled in Brisbane Queensland in 1862 at 19 years of age. Surveying career Phillips joined the Roads Department in 1862 and in 1863 shifted to the Lands Department. He accompanied William Landsborough to Burketown in 1866 explored west of Bowen and discovered and named the Diamantina River. Landsborough and Phillips founded Normanton, he surveyed the town in 1867. In 1868 he became Staff Surveyor of Kennedy, surveying the towns of Bowen, Townsville, Cardwell, Ingham and Mackay. George Lort-Phillips (4 July 1811 – 30 October 1866) was Conservative Member of Parliament for Pembrokeshire in Wales from 1861 until his death. Biography George Lort Phillips was born in Stokenham, Devon, the eldest son of John Lort Philipps by his marriage to Augusta Ilbert. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire from 1835. He married, in 1841, Isabella Georgina Allen, youngest daughter of John Hensleigh Allen who had been the Whig member of parliament for the borough of Pembroke from 1818 to 1826. George Phillips (Watertown)
George Phillips (c. 1593 – July 1, 1644) was an English-born Puritan minister who led, along with Richard Saltonstall, a group of English settlers up the Charles River to settle in what is now Watertown, Massachusetts in 1630. A Puritan who was part of the Great Migration from England to New England, Phillips was a contemporary of, and often shared differing views with, John Winthrop. He established the first Congregational Church in Watertown and was one of the early influencers of the Congregational Church in North America. His descendants number in the thousands and are well represented in American history in the clergy, local and national politics, business, and social justice arenas. George Phillips (11 January 1804 – 5 February 1892), was an English churchman and academic, known as an orientalist and mathematician. He was also the Rector of Sandon, Essex, the President of Queens' College, Cambridge , from 1857 until his death and Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University from 1861 to 1862. Early life and education Born in Dunwich, Suffolk, he was the son of Francis Phillips, a farmer. After spending his early years in farm work, and acquiring a knowledge of mathematics in his spare time, Phillips became a master at the grammar school in Woodbridge, Suffolk, and later at that in Worcester. George Phillips (6 September 1804 – 6 September 1872) was a German canon lawyer. Life He was born in Königsberg, the son of James Phillips, an Englishman who had acquired wealth as a merchant in Königsberg, and of a Scotswoman née Hay. On completing his course at the gymnasium, George studied law at the Universities of Berlin and Göttingen (1822–24); his principal teachers were von Savigny and Karl Friedrich Eichhorn, and, under the influence of the latter, he devoted himself mainly to the study of Germanic law. George Bagster Phillips (February 1835 in Camberwell, Surrey – 27 October 1897 in London) was, from 1865, the Police Surgeon for the Metropolitan Police's 'H' Division, which covered London's Whitechapel district. He came to prominence during the murders of Jack the Ripper when he conducted or attended autopsies on the bodies of four of the victims, namely Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly. He was called by the police to the murder scenes of three of them: Chapman, Stride and Kelly.
