Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet
Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet (24 March 1766 – 3 October 1847) was an English textile industrialist and politician. He was closely associated with Manchesterism and has been described as the "unofficial member for Manchester", though not formally representing it. Biography Philips came from an old Staffordshire family that had held manors there since the reign of Edward VI of England, and were seated at Heath House in the same county since the early seventeenth century, that continued to be lived in by his cousins. George's father, Thomas Philips (1728–1811) of Sedgley, Lancashire, established a cotton manufacturing company in Manchester. George attended several schools, including Stand Grammar School. Sir George Philips, 2nd Baronet
Sir George Philips, 2nd Baronet (23 December 1789 – 22 February 1883) was a British Whig politician. He was the eldest son of Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet of Sedgley, near Manchester and Weston House, near Chipping Norton, Warwickshire and was educated at Eton College (1805–08) and Trinity College, Cambridge (1808). He succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet on 3 October 1847. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Horsham from 1818 to 1820 (while below the age of 21), for Steyning from 1820 to 1824, for Kidderminster from 1835 to 1837, and for Poole from 1837 to 1852. He was High Sheriff of Warwickshire for 1859–60. He married the Hon. Sarah Georgina Cavendish, the daughter of Richard Cavendish, 2nd Baron Waterpark. George Philips (cricketer)
George Henry Philips (18 July 1831 – 22 October 1886) was an English first-class cricketer. The son of Francis Aspinall Philips, he was born in July 1831 at Ardwick, Lancashire. He was educated at Eton College, before going up to Christ Church, Oxford in 1849. While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University Cricket Club on one occasion in 1853 against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Oxford. Five years later he made a second appearance in first-class cricket, this time for the MCC against Oxford University at Oxford. For Oxford University he played as a wicket-keeper, taking one catch and making one stumping, while across both matches he scored 29 runs. He inherited Abbey Cwmhir Hall in Radnorshire from his father in 1859.
