George Newton, 1st Baron Eltisley
George Douglas Cochrane Newton, 1st Baron Eltisley, (14 July 1879 – 2 September 1942) was a Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was appointed High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire for 1909. Following the First World War, he joined the Rural Reconstruction in the Department of the Ministry of Reconstruction. He was invested as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1919 New Year Honours. He was then elected as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Cambridge (UK Parliament constituency), Cambridge at a 1922 Cambridge by-election, by-election in 1922 following the resignation from the British House of Commons, resignation of the Conservative MP Sir Eric Campbell Geddes, Eric Geddes. George Newton (1602–1681) was an English ejected nonconformist minister. Life Newton was born in Devon, and was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he matriculated 17 December 1619, and proceeded B.A. 14 June 1621, and M.A. 23 June 1624. He began his ministry at Bishop's Hull, near Taunton, Somerset, and was presented to the vicarage of St. Mary Magdalene, Taunton, 7 April 1631, by Sir William Portman and Robert Hill. When the '' Declaration of Sports'' was issued by the Privy Council for Charles I in 1633, and ordered to be read in churches, Newton told his congregation that he read it as the commandment of man, and immediately thereafter he read the twentieth chapter of Exodus as the commandment of God, informing his hearers that these two commandments happened to be in contradiction to each other, but that they were at liberty to choose which they liked best. Mount Pisgah is a mountain in the Appalachian mountain range and part of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, United States. The mountain's height is 5,721 feet (1,744 m) above sea level, and it sits approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of Asheville, near the crossing of the boundaries of Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Transylvania counties. It is located on the border of Buncombe and Haywood counties, close to the point where Henderson and Transylvania meet them, but not actually within the latter two counties. The mountain is easily accessible via a hiking trail from the Blue Ridge Parkway, near the Pisgah Inn. George Newton (weightlifter)
George Newton (13 August 1936 – 23 February 2016) was a male weightlifter who competed for England and Great Britain, and then for New Zealand at the end of his career. Weightlifting career He represented England and won a gold medal in 60 kg, at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia. Four years later he stepped up in weight to the -67.5 kg category and went on to win a silver medal and two consecutive gold medals, at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland and the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand.
