George Moseley (civil Servant)
Sir George Walker Moseley, KCB (7 February 1925 – 28 September 2011) was a Scottish civil servant. The son of William Moseley, MBE, he entered the Royal Air Force in 1943 and served as a pilot in Iraq, leaving the force in 1948. He studied at Wadham College, Oxford, before entering the civil service. For much of his career he was in the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (where he was principal private secretary to the minister from 1963 to 1965) and then its successor the Department of the Environment, where he was Permanent Secretary from 1981 to his retirement in 1985. He was then chairman of the Civic Trust from 1990 to 2000 and chairman of the British Cement Association at the same time. Knight Companion Of The Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. The Secretary of State for the Environment was a UK cabinet position, responsible for the Department of the Environment (DoE). This was created by Edward Heath as a combination of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Public Building and Works on 15 October 1970. Thus it managed a mixed portfolio of issues: housing and planning, local government, public buildings, environmental protection and, initially, transport – James Callaghan gave transport its own department again in 1976. A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a head of state (including the Pope) or representative for service to the monarch, the church or the country, especially in a military capacity. Knighthood finds origins in the Greek ''hippeis'' and '' hoplite'' (ἱππεῖς) and Roman '' eques'' and '' centurion'' of classical antiquity. In the Early Middle Ages in Europe, knighthood was conferred upon mounted warriors. During the High Middle Ages, knighthood was considered a class of lower nobility. Sir Terence ("Terry") Michael Heiser (born 24 May 1932) is a former British senior civil servant. Heiser served as Permanent Secretary at the Department of the Environment from 1985 to 1992. Heiser was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 1984 New Year Honours. John Garlick
Sir John Garlick, KCB (17 May 1921 – 17 August 2005) was an English civil servant. Educated at the University of London, Garlick was an engineer with the Post Office before he entered the civil service in 1948; from 1974 to 1977, he was the Second Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office with responsibility for the Constitution Unit. He was then Permanent Secretary of the Department for the Environment from 1977 to 1981. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition.
